What does a marketing manager contractor do?

A Marketing Manager Contractor is a marketing professional who works on a contract basis, either independently or through an agency, to help businesses develop and execute marketing strategies. Their responsibilities often include planning campaigns, managing budgets, conducting market research, and coordinating with teams to achieve specific marketing goals. Unlike full-time employees, contractors are typically hired for specific projects or set periods, offering businesses flexibility and specialized expertise. This role is ideal for organizations seeking marketing leadership without committing to a permanent hire.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marketing manager contractor?

To thrive as a Marketing Manager Contractor, you need expertise in marketing strategy, campaign execution, analytics, and a relevant degree or proven experience in marketing management. Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics, CRM platforms, email marketing systems, and project management software is typically required, along with certifications such as Google Ads or HubSpot. Strong communication, adaptability, and project management skills help contractors build client relationships and deliver results in dynamic environments. These competencies are crucial for driving successful campaigns, meeting client objectives, and maintaining a competitive edge in the freelance marketplace.

How do marketing manager contractors typically integrate with in-house teams during a project?

Marketing Manager Contractors often work closely with in-house teams to ensure alignment on campaign goals, brand guidelines, and project timelines. They usually participate in regular meetings, collaborate through shared project management tools, and provide updates to key stakeholders. Building strong communication channels is essential, as contractors must quickly adapt to the company's culture and processes while delivering on specific project objectives. This collaborative structure enables contractors to deliver value efficiently, even within limited-term engagements.

Job description

Radar Reinvented.
Echodyne offers the world's first compact solid-state true beam-steering radar for a wide range of industries and applications. Our high-performance radars work in all weather and are designed for autonomous vehicles, uncrewed aircraft & drones, and security of borders, critical infrastructure, and smart cities. The company combines the patented technology of metamaterials with powerful software to create a radar sensor with unprecedented performance at commercial price points. Echodyne offers its radars to companies working in Automotive, Transportation, Critical Infrastructure Protection, Border Security, Smart Cities, Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), and Airspace Management including Urban Air Mobility (UTM).
Echodyne is seeking a hands-on field and technical Marketing Manager to support our mission-critical radar solutions.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Echodyne is seeking a highly organized, execution-oriented Marketing Manager to support integrated marketing programs across defense, government, critical infrastructure, and related technology markets. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role for a marketer who can move effectively between campaign execution, content development, event management, technical discussions, and day-to-day coordination with internal teams.
The Marketing Manager will work closely with colleagues across Marketing, Sales, Business Development, Product Management, and Sales Enablement. The successful candidate will be comfortable managing multiple competing priorities, communicating tradeoffs, and maintaining a high standard of follow-through in a fast-paced environment.
A significant part of the role involves representing Echodyne at industry events, customer engagements, and demonstrations. The Marketing Manager must be able to quickly grasp technical radar concepts and confidently explain Echodyne's MESA radar systems portfolio to audiences ranging from individual visitors and customer teams to large groups at trade shows and conferences.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Manage multiple concurrent marketing projects with shifting deadlines and stakeholders; prioritize work, track dependencies, communicate risks, and deliver assigned tasks on time.
  • Collaborate closely with the broader Marketing team to coordinate campaigns, content, events, digital activities, product messaging, and sales-enablement priorities.
  • Partner with Sales and Business Development teams to understand customer needs, regional opportunities, strategic priorities, and upcoming engagements, then translate those needs into practical marketing support.
  • Support planning and execution for trade shows, conferences, customer demonstrations, and partner events, including schedules, booth operations, staffing, materials, vendors, lead capture, and post-event follow-up.
  • Represent Echodyne at industry events and engage professionally with large and diverse groups of customers, partners, government representatives, media, and other stakeholders.
  • Deliver clear product overviews and portfolio presentations that explain the value and applications of Echodyne's MESA radar systems to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop working knowledge of radar fundamentals, customer missions, competitive technologies, and Echodyne product capabilities through collaboration with technical subject-matter experts and independent study.
  • Translate complex technical concepts into accurate, accessible customer-facing content, including presentations, collateral, event materials, case studies, web content, email campaigns, and sales tools.
  • Coordinate with Product Management and technical teams to validate claims, maintain message accuracy, and ensure external materials reflect current product capabilities and positioning.
  • Execute digital and outbound marketing activities across web, email, CRM, marketing automation, and related channels; maintain organized campaign and contact data.
  • Monitor campaign, event, and engagement performance; summarize results and recommend practical improvements to messaging, process, and resource allocation.
  • Support agency, contractor, partner, and vendor coordination as needed, while maintaining brand consistency and high-quality execution.
REQUIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
  • 4+ years of B2B marketing, field marketing, product marketing, event marketing, communications, or related experience in a technology-focused environment.
  • 2+ years of experience in Defense, Security, or Drone-related industries.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and complete multiple competing tasks while maintaining attention to detail, responsiveness, and sound judgment about priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style, with experience supporting Sales, Business Development, Product, or other cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including confidence presenting to groups and engaging with customers in busy event environments.
  • Ability and motivation to learn technical topics quickly, ask effective questions, retain key details, and explain complex concepts clearly and accurately.
  • Hands-on experience supporting trade shows, conferences, demonstrations, customer meetings, or other field-marketing activities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 50% of the time, including multi-day events and occasional international travel as business needs require.
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
DESIRED SKILLS / EXPERIENCE
(Looking for one or more as a complement to the core skills)

  • Experience in defense technology, aerospace, autonomy, robotics, sensors, critical infrastructure, advanced mobility, or another technically complex industry.
  • Familiarity with U.S. defense, federal civilian, public-safety, or government customer environments and long-cycle technical buying processes.
  • Experience creating customer-facing technical content in collaboration with engineers, product managers, or technical subject-matter experts.
  • Experience with Salesforce Account Engagement or a comparable CRM and marketing-automation platform.
  • Comfort working in a lean, fast-growing organization where priorities evolve and team members contribute beyond narrow functional boundaries.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Office-based or remote work arrangement, with regular virtual collaboration and periodic in-person meetings as required.
  • Approximately 50% travel to support industry events, customer and partner engagements, demonstrations, and internal collaboration.
  • Highly collaborative environment with frequent interaction across Marketing, Sales, Business Development, Product Management, engineering, and leadership teams.
  • Fast-paced operating environment requiring flexibility, personal accountability, and a willingness to balance planned work with urgent business needs.
  • Role may require standing for extended periods, moving event materials, and supporting setup and teardown activities at trade shows and demonstrations.
