What is a marker tech?

Marker Techs, short for Marker Technicians, are professionals responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing various types of marking equipment and systems. These can include field markers for sports, highway and road line markers, or even markers used in manufacturing and construction sites. Their duties involve ensuring equipment is properly calibrated, troubleshooting issues, and following safety standards. Marker Techs often work outdoors and must be detail-oriented to ensure markings are accurate and durable. This role may require specialized training depending on the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a marker tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Marker Tech, you need a solid understanding of garment construction, pattern making, and fabric types, often supported by a background in fashion design or textiles. Familiarity with CAD marker making systems like Gerber or Lectra is essential, and some employers may require certification in these tools. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication help Marker Techs optimize fabric usage and collaborate with design and production teams. These skills ensure efficient material use, cost savings, and high-quality garment production in the apparel industry.

What are some common challenges marker techs face when setting up and maintaining course markings during tournaments?

Marker Techs often work under tight deadlines and changing weather conditions, which can make accurate course marking and maintenance challenging. They must ensure that all markers are correctly placed, visible, and comply with tournament regulations, sometimes needing to make quick adjustments as play progresses. Collaboration with groundskeepers, officials, and event staff is essential to address any last-minute changes or issues. Attention to detail and effective communication are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring a smooth tournament experience.

Position Summary:

The Marker Technician is responsible for creating, optimizing, maintaining, and releasing production markers used for cutting fabric, leather, vinyl, mesh, and other upholstery materials. This role converts approved production patterns into efficient, accurate cutting layouts that maximize material utilization while meeting product, material, quality, and manufacturing requirements.

Working closely with Pattern Development, Cutting, Manufacturing Engineering, Production, Quality, and Materials teams, the Marker Technician ensures that markers are accurate, revision-controlled, material appropriate, and ready for reliable production execution.

The Marker Technician plays a key role in controlling material cost, improving cutting efficiency, and preventing production issues caused by incorrect pattern revisions, orientation, nesting, or marker configuration.

Onsite 5x/week in Buena Park.

Hours: 6am-3pm

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Create production markers using approved digital pattern files and applicable nesting/marker-making software.
  • Develop markers for fabric, vinyl, mesh, leather, laminated materials, and other upholstery materials as applicable.
  • Create markers appropriate for production quantities, material widths, cutting equipment, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Optimize marker layouts to achieve high material utilization and minimize scrap.
  • Analyze marker efficiency across different material widths and product configurations.
  • Work closely with Cutting operations to ensure markers are compatible with available cutting equipment and processes.
  • Troubleshoot marker-related issues encountered during spreading, cutting, kitting, sewing, or upholstery operations.
  • Provide technical support to cutting operators when new products, materials, or marker configurations are introduced.
  • Maintain accurate digital marker files and associated production documentation.
  • Update markers when patterns, materials, widths, product configurations, or manufacturing requirements change.
Qualifications, Skills and Education:
Required
  • 3+ years of experience in marker making, digital nesting, cutting-room technology, pattern processing, or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Experience working with computerized marker-making or nesting software.
  • Strong understanding of pattern orientation, grain direction, material direction, and cutting requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret digital patterns, technical documentation, and production requirements.
Preferred
  • Experience in office seating, automotive seating, residential furniture, apparel, transportation interiors, or other sewn-product manufacturing.
  • Experience working with fabric, leather, vinyl, mesh, and laminated materials.
  • Knowledge of Gerber, Lectra, Eastman, Zund, or similar pattern, nesting, and cutting technologies.
