Are you passionate about marine engineering and ready to support groundbreaking oceanographic research? Scripps Institution of Oceanography invites you to join our team at the Nimitz Marine Facility, where you will play a crucial role in advancing knowledge of the world's oceans and the Earth.

Position: Per Diem Engine Crew Member Pool Must be prepared for sea service, with deployments typically averaging two to three (2 - 3) months.

About Us: Scripps Institution of Oceanography is a global leader in ocean and earth science research, education, and public service. Our research spans physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans and Earth. Our fleet includes three renowned research vessels:

  • R/V Roger Revelle: Flagship global-class research vessel.

  • R/V Sally Ride: Cutting-edge ocean-class ship.

  • R/V Robert Gordon Sproul: Versatile regional-class vessel.

Both R/V Roger Revelle and R/V Sally Ride meet tonnage requirements for maintaining and upgrading unlimited licenses.

Available Positions: We continuously accept applications for a per diem pool of candidates to be deployed on an "as needed" basis throughout the year for the following engine crew positions:

  • Chief Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower) Title Code: 5647 Salary Range: $84.16 - $122.61/hr

  • 1st Engineer Title Code: 4292 Salary Range: $52.16 - $75.98/hr

  • 2nd Engineer Title Code: 4293 Salary Range: $47.05 - $68.55/hr

  • 3rd Engineer (Unlimited Horsepower) Title Code: 4294 Salary Range: $41.91 - $61.06/hr

  • Marine Electrician (QMED or Oiler Endorsement plus electrician experience) Title Code: 4296 Salary Range: $38.79 - $56.50/hr

  • Oiler (QMED, DDE, or Oiler Endorsement) Title Code: 4297 Salary Range: $32.36 - $47.13/hr

  • Wiper Title Code: 4298 Salary Range: $25 - $36.42/hr

QUALIFICATIONS

To qualify for these rewarding opportunities, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard documentation and endorsements for the position, including:

    • Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsements such as VPDSD, STCW, RFPNW/RFPEW, and OICNW/OICEW (for Officers ONLY).
  • Valid Medical Certificate with STCW and National Expiration Dates.

  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).

  • A valid U.S. Passport.

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

  • Job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background check.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $179,234 - $261,125 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $85.84 - $125.06

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
