A Brief Summary of This Position:

Reporting to the VP of Concrete Strategy and Transformation, this position is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Engineering functions of the Concrete Engineering team.  This includes functions as they relate to customer support and department-specific improvement projects, for product lines within the site.  This position serves as the first level of escalation contact for the team members, and internal and external Valmont customers.  The incumbent assists in the annual planning and goal setting for the team. The Engineering manager is also responsible for supporting market changes, driving accountability to deliver results, and assisting in developing individuals within their career track. The Concrete Engineering Manager will mentor and develop the Engineering team. They are responsible for assisting with succession planning within the Engineering department.

Essential Functions:

  • This position reports to the VP of Concrete Strategy and Transformation and has direct reports
  • This role requires up to 25% travel (domestically), including overnight stays
  • Flexible schedule however should be able to work in the office 2-3 days per week
  • Oversee the daily operations functions of the Concrete Engineering team
  • Provide leadership and technical support to the team, internal and external Valmont customers
  • Performance management processes including annual reviews, goal setting, individual development plans, mentoring, and succession planning
  • Identify areas of improvement and implement changes or consult with management to obtain proper approval for changes, if needed
  • Work closely with support staff personnel to assist support staff with achieving goals
  • Provide formal performance plan feedback and evaluate team members as part of the performance management process
  • Support departmental initiatives such that employees participate on involvement teams in support of critical success factors of the division, including the continuous quality improvement of processes and services
  • Participate in collaboration with the Engineering System team to improve the engineering system and design tools
  • Maintain and improve the functional aspect of the position 
  • Correct problems or refer them to the appropriate resource for correction
  • Lead colleagues and stakeholders to develop or improve procedures or functionality of processes and procedures
  • Maintain a high degree of coordination with other Valmont support staff and their activities
  • Use of project management tools such as JIRA boards and action plans expected
  • Identify employee training needs and provide training to new engineer
  • Recruitment and interviewing of personnel
  • Support engineers to provide solutions to production issues and field problems

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Structural, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering and 7+ years of relevant experience
  • P.E. Certification
  • Fluent in English Oral and Written communication
  • Travel up to 25% ( including overnight travel)

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • 15 years in engineering, specializing in structural/civil engineering with 7+ years in prestressed concrete design
  • Seven years in product engineering
  • Five years in supervisory roles
  • Four years in project management
  • Leadership training program
