What is a manufacturing engineer?

A manufacturing engineer is a specialized engineer who improves product manufacturing processes. As a manufacturing engineer, your primary duties are to design and develop production systems and improve the tools and systems within the manufacturing process. You will use computer software such as CAD to create, modify, and test the products and manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges a manufacturing engineer faces in optimizing production processes?

Manufacturing Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing efficiency with product quality, minimizing production costs while maintaining safety standards, and implementing new technologies without disrupting existing workflows. They may also need to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with cross-functional teams, such as quality assurance and maintenance, to resolve issues quickly. Staying up-to-date with industry advancements and continuous improvement methodologies like Lean or Six Sigma is essential to overcoming these challenges and driving process enhancements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manufacturing engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process optimization, and quality control, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications, and experience with automation systems are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you effectively collaborate and drive continuous improvement. These abilities ensure efficient production processes, cost reduction, and high product quality in a competitive manufacturing environment.

What is the difference between Manufacturing Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectManufacturing EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Manufacturing, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering; certifications like CMfgEBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentFactories, production plants, manufacturing facilitiesDesign offices, research labs, manufacturing settings
Industry UsageManufacturing, production, industrial sectorsAutomotive, aerospace, energy, product design

Manufacturing Engineers focus on optimizing production processes and workflows within manufacturing environments, while Mechanical Engineers design and analyze mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering degrees, but Manufacturing Engineers are more involved in process improvement and production efficiency, whereas Mechanical Engineers often work on product design and mechanical system development.

How much do manufacturing engineers earn?

Manufacturing engineers typically earn a median annual salary of around $70,000 to $90,000, depending on experience, location, and industry. Salaries can increase with advanced skills, certifications, and managerial responsibilities.

Job description

Structural Engineer Design Innovative Steel Structures. Shape Projects That Last.

PTW is seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Engineering Services team in Calgary. If you're passionate about structural steel design, enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, and want to see your designs come to life from concept through fabrication and field installation, this is an opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Reporting to the Manager, Engineering Services, you'll join a collaborative team responsible for the engineering, design, and detailing of modular buildings, pre-engineered steel structures, industrial facilities, control buildings, MCC buildings, substations, and commercial steel structures for clients across Western Canada.

Unlike a traditional consulting environment, this role provides the opportunity to work closely with our manufacturing team and see your designs move from engineering to fabrication and construction.

This is a full-time, permanent, on-site position based at our Calgary manufacturing facility.

What You'll Do

As a Structural Engineer, you'll take ownership of projects from concept through fabrication and field support, delivering safe, practical, and cost-effective structural solutions while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Perform structural analysis and design for industrial and commercial steel structures.

  • Design structural systems in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada, CSA standards, and applicable provincial codes.

  • Review, approve, and authenticate structural drawings for fabrication, shop, and field assembly.

  • Perform code compliance reviews and technical reviews of engineering drawings and bid estimates.

  • Support estimating by providing structural analysis, steel member sizing, connection design, foundation reactions, and engineering recommendations.

  • Review engineering work completed by other structural designers and engineers.

  • Collaborate with Project Management, Manufacturing, Purchasing, Mechanical, and Electrical teams to ensure designs are practical, efficient, and manufacturable.

  • Provide technical support during fabrication and construction to ensure successful project execution.

  • Assist with structural inspections in the manufacturing facility and at project sites as required.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to engineering standards, design practices, and manufacturing processes.

  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance within the engineering team.

  • Champion PTW's commitment to safety by complying with all Health & Safety policies and applicable legislation.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for a collaborative engineer who enjoys solving technical challenges and delivering innovative structural solutions.

Qualifications include:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA.

  • Registration with APEGS and/or Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) is considered an asset.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing Canadian industrial and commercial structural steel buildings.

  • Strong knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), CSA S16, CSA S136, CSA W59, and other applicable building codes and standards.

  • Experience using structural engineering software such as Graitec Advance Design, STAAD.Pro, S-Frame, or similar.

  • Experience using MBS is considered an asset.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Practical, solutions-focused mindset with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and professional integrity.

Why Join PTW?

At PTW, our engineers are more than designers—they're trusted technical experts whose work directly impacts the success of every project. Here, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Own projects from concept through fabrication and field support.

  • Design innovative structural solutions for industrial and commercial facilities across Western Canada.

  • Work side-by-side with manufacturing teams and see your designs come to life.

  • Collaborate with experienced engineering, fabrication, and construction professionals.

  • Continue developing your technical expertise while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

  • Build a long-term career with a company that values safety, quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary

  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.

  • Employer-matched retirement savings plan.

  • Professional development opportunities, including support for continuing education, technical training, and professional association memberships.

  • Career advancement opportunities within a growing organization.

  • Collaborative, supportive, and experienced engineering team.

  • Stable, full-time permanent employment.
