What you will do

At Volvo Trucks, New River Valley facility you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry, and society at large.

You will: Support the development, launch, and continuous improvement of production processes while gaining hands-on experience on the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support engineers in designing and improving manufacturing processes, tooling, and equipment
  • Assist with data analysis to evaluate cycle time, throughput, and production performance
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, applying Lean principles to increase efficiency and reduce waste
  • Help develop process documentation, work instructions, and standard work
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Production, Quality, and Design Engineering
  • Support prototype builds and new product launches, contributing to successful ramp-up into production
  • Observe and identify opportunities to improve safety, ergonomics, and workflow
Who are you?
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field at an accredited school and have completed 30 semester hours prior to the start of the internship.
  • Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75ย 
  • Fall interns may work up to 30 hours per week
  • Strong interest in automotive manufacturing, welding technologies, and surface treatment processes (e.g., e-coating, painting, sealing).
  • Interest in Lean manufacturing and process improvement
  • Comfortable working both on the shop floor and with data/tools (Excel, etc.)
  • Proactive, curious, and eager to learn in a hands-on environment
  • Knowledge of CAD software (e.g., CATIA, NX, SolidWorks) and familiarity with PLM systems is a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). PowerBI is also a plus.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Self-driven and eager to learn in a fast-paced environment.

The hourly rate for these roles is determined by several factors including, but not limited to, geographic location, academic classification, and degree seeking area of study.
