Job description

Under the close supervision of the Foreman or Lead Man, the Laborer I performs routine manual tasks as part of a roadway maintenance crew. The employee drives a light truck or tractor, patches roads, spreads asphalt, and shovels materials. The employee also operates simple hand tools and performs flagman duties.

This is an entry level position. Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following list was developed through a job analysis; however, it is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. A person with a disability which is covered by the ADA must be able to perform the essential functions of the job unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Operation. Operates light equipment using proper safety gear in order to perform various road and ROW maintenance operations in a safe and proper manner. Drives light tractor and operates bush-hog to clear highway rights-of way.

Drives light trucks to and from work sites. Cleans ditches and cuts back bushes and weeds. Applies patching materials to roads.

Mows grass, prunes shrubs, rakes grass from County property. Digs ditches and holes for various purposes. Moves and carries pipe, lumber or other construction materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Equipment Maintenance. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle. Performs daily vehicle safety and maintenance inspections on assigned equipment.

Performs preventative maintenance on equipment. Ensures vehicle is properly fueled. Monitors mileage and ensures vehicle receives scheduled maintenance.

Reports any discrepancies to supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Manual Labor. Performs manual labor tasks following departmental policies and procedures in order to ensure proper maintenance and efficient operations of the department.

Performs flagman duties to direct traffic around worksites. Shovels asphalt, rocks, cinders, dirt and other materials. Uses chain saw to cut trees from right-of-way.

Loads and unloads construction materials and supplies. Moves and transports items weighing over 50lbs. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements Minimum Qualifications Ability to read and write. Possess a current and valid driver's license. Ability to travel throughout the County.

Ability to work overtime or non-standard hours as required.
