What is a managing partner lawyer?

A Managing Partner Lawyer is a senior attorney who not only practices law but also oversees the business operations of a law firm. They are responsible for strategic planning, managing partners and staff, and ensuring the firm's financial health. In addition to their legal expertise, they handle administrative tasks such as budgeting, marketing, and human resources. Their role is crucial in setting the firm's direction and maintaining its reputation and profitability.

What are some common challenges faced by a managing partner lawyer when balancing leadership duties with client responsibilities?

A Managing Partner Lawyer often navigates the dual demands of leading the firm while maintaining a robust client portfolio. Balancing these responsibilities requires effective delegation, strong time management, and clear communication with both legal teams and clients. The role frequently involves strategic decision-making, firm administration, and mentoring junior lawyers, all while ensuring high-quality legal service to clients. Successfully managing these competing priorities is essential for the firm's growth and the Managing Partner's ongoing professional development.

Familiarity with case management software, financial management systems, and legal research databases is essential. Philadelphia, PA โ€ข On-site

$100K - $1M/yr

Full-time

Job description

ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY – WAGE & HOUR LITIGATION
Wage & Hour Attorneys | Multi-Office (NY · NJ · PA · FL · CA)

About Us
Wage & Hour Attorneys is a plaintiff-side litigation firm with offices in New York, Philadelphia, Miami, New Jersey, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. We represent workers across the country in cases involving unpaid overtime, minimum wage violations, employee misclassification, off-the-clock work, stolen tips, unpaid commissions, and class and collective actions. Our mission is straightforward: fight wage theft and hold employers accountable.

The Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Associate Attorney to join our litigation team. This is a substantive, hands-on litigation role. You will be responsible for working up wage and hour cases from intake through trial-ready preparation, under the supervision of the firm's Managing Partner. While you will not sit lead chair at trial, you will be expected to own every phase of the case before that point, and to be fully prepared to support trial proceedings.

What You'll Do
• Evaluate and screen new client intakes; conduct client interviews and initial case assessments
• Draft and respond to pleadings, discovery requests, motions, and briefs
• Manage all phases of discovery, including written discovery, document review, and depositions.
• Conduct legal research on federal and state wage and hour law, with a focus on FLSA and applicable state statutes across the firm's jurisdictions
• Draft demand letters, mediation submissions, and settlement agreements
• Assist in the development and prosecution of class and collective action matters, including conditional and final certification briefing
• Communicate directly with clients, opposing counsel, and court staff
• Work collaboratively with the Managing Partner to develop litigation strategy and prepare cases for trial
• Stay current on evolving FLSA regulations, state wage laws, and relevant case law

What We're Looking For
• J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar admission required (NY, NJ, PA, FL, or CA preferred)
• 2–5 years of litigation experience; wage and hour experience strongly preferred, plaintiff-side employment law experience a plus as well
• Solid working knowledge of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and state-specific wage and hour laws, including but not limited to New York Labor Law, New Jersey Wage Payment Law, Pennsylvania Minimum Wage Act, California Labor Code, and Florida wage statutes
• Familiarity with class action and FLSA collective action procedures under Rule 23 and 29 U.S.C. § 216(b)
• Strong legal research and writing skills; ability to draft clear, persuasive briefs and motions
• Highly organized, self-directed, and capable of managing multiple active files simultaneously
• Commitment to representing workers and a genuine interest in employee-side advocacy

• Experience with PAGA claims (California) or other state-specific representative action procedures
• Familiarity with DOL investigation procedures and administrative wage claims
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus given our client base

What We Offer
• Competitive compensation -  $100K per year for the first year while you develop your caseload, and then your salary will switch to 1/3 of the firm's attorneys fees like all of our attorneys who, generally, make much more than that. Also, while we do not provide health insurance through the firm, after 6 months we reimburse 50% of the cost of your premium up to $450. You will receive a 401k safe harbor after one year.
• Meaningful, substantive litigation work from day one
• Mentorship and direct supervision by the Managing Partner
• A firm culture built on advocacy, accountability, and client results
• Opportunity for growth in a nationally active plaintiff-side practice

Wage & Hour Attorneys is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
