What does a Manager WinCC do?

A Manager WinCC is responsible for overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of Siemens WinCC (Windows Control Center) systems, which are used for process visualization and control in industrial automation. This role typically involves managing SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) projects, coordinating a team of engineers or technicians, ensuring system reliability, and integrating WinCC solutions with other automation technologies. They also troubleshoot issues, provide technical support, and may handle client communications regarding system upgrades or customizations.

What is the difference between Manager Wincc vs Control Systems Engineer?

The Manager Wincc primarily oversees automation projects, manages teams, and coordinates with clients, focusing on project delivery. In contrast, the Control Systems Engineer concentrates on designing and implementing control systems, including programming and testing. Both roles require knowledge of Wincc and PLCs but differ in responsibilities and focus areas within industrial automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager WinCC?

To thrive as a Manager WinCC, you need strong expertise in industrial automation, SCADA systems, and process engineering, typically supported by a degree in electrical, automation, or computer engineering. Proficiency with Siemens WinCC software, PLC programming, and industrial communication protocols is essential, along with relevant certifications in automation technologies. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are key soft skills for managing teams and coordinating with stakeholders. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient system performance, minimizing downtime, and leading successful automation projects.

What are some common challenges a Manager WinCC faces when overseeing SCADA system projects?

A Manager WinCC often encounters challenges such as ensuring seamless integration of WinCC with existing automation infrastructure, managing cross-functional teams of engineers and IT specialists, and keeping up with frequent updates or changes in SCADA security standards. Balancing project timelines while coordinating with stakeholders from production, maintenance, and IT departments can require strong organizational and communication skills. Being proactive about troubleshooting and system optimization also helps minimize downtime and supports overall operational efficiency.

Job description

Company Description:

A US-based corporation specializing in individual machine control and plant-wide automation solutions using Siemens and Rockwell PLCs and HMI systems. The company supports projects across design, programming, implementation, and start-up for both discrete machines and complex process control systems. The organization focuses on structured PLC and HMI programming environments such as Siemens STEP 7, STEP 5, WinCC, and Rockwell/Allen-Bradley RSLogix, RSView SE, and RSView 32. With more than 50 years of on-staff automation experience, the company delivers comprehensive, integrated solutions tailored to modern industrial automation needs. The company is committed to providing the right technical solution to meet each client's requirements.

Role Description:

This is a full-time, on-site Siemens WinCC TIA Programmer role. The programmer will develop, configure, and maintain Siemens TIA Portal and WinCC-based PLC and HMI applications for machine control and plant-wide automation projects. Daily activities include writing and testing PLC logic, designing HMI screens, integrating field devices, troubleshooting control systems, and supporting commissioning and start-up at customer facilities. The role involves collaborating with engineers and project managers to gather requirements, prepare documentation, and ensure solutions meet performance, safety, and quality standards. The programmer will also participate in system upgrades, optimization, and ongoing technical support for installed systems.

Qualifications:
  • Strong proficiency in Siemens TIA Portal, WinCC, and STEP 7 for PLC and HMI programming, including configuration, testing, and troubleshooting.

  • Hands-on experience with industrial automation systems, field devices (sensors, drives, actuators), and control panel hardware integration.

  • Ability to interpret and work from electrical schematics, P&IDs, and functional specifications, translating them into robust control logic.

  • Experience with commissioning and start-up of automation projects, including on-site testing, tuning, and issue resolution.

  • Solid understanding of industrial networking and communication protocols (e.g., Profinet, Profibus, Ethernet/IP) and system integration practices.

  • Familiarity with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley platforms (RSLogix, RSView) is beneficial for multi-platform environments.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for documentation, client interaction, and collaborative project work.

  • Relevant technical degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
