Job description

Job Title: Controls Technician

Job Description

The Controls Technician is responsible for installing, commissioning, maintaining, and repairing packaging equipment-primarily aseptic thermoform machines-at customer sites, with a strong emphasis on controls platforms and PLC-based systems. This role ensures optimal machine performance, delivers high-quality technical support, and contributes to long-term customer satisfaction and relationships through expert field service and technical guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, maintain, and repair new and existing packaging equipment, with a focus on aseptic thermoform machines at customer sites.
  • Perform field audits on installed equipment to assess performance, reliability, and compliance with specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and support PLC-based control systems, including Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, and SCL platforms.
  • Analyze and resolve on-site electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system issues to restore and optimize machine performance.
  • Modify and update machine control software and firmware as required to support upgrades, improvements, and customer-specific needs.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of machine configurations, service activities, and technical changes.
  • Provide on-site customer support to ensure efficient issue resolution, high service quality, and strong customer satisfaction.
  • Train customers, operators, and technical teams on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, safety practices, and control systems.
  • Serve as the site lead or acting manager when assigned, coordinating field technicians and collaborating with engineering, assembly, and customer teams.

Essential Skills

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or completion of at least 2 years of vocational training in Electromechanical Systems.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the OEM industry designing, editing, installing, and troubleshooting PLC and motion control software and hardware.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting PLC-based control systems, including platforms such as Allen Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Codesys, and SCL.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
  • Experience with controls programming and controls engineering for industrial machinery.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic system issues on-site.
  • Capability to modify and update machine control software and firmware safely and effectively.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and occasionally internationally up to approximately 75-80% of the time, including extended periods away from home.

Work Environment

This role is primarily field-based and on-site at customer locations, with an expected travel requirement of approximately 75-80%, including domestic and occasional international trips and extended periods away from home. The position involves frequent interaction with customer operators, maintenance teams, and internal engineering and assembly teams, as well as participation in commissioning activities. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, and strict adherence to customer site safety protocols and procedures is expected.

The pay range for this position is $83200.00 - $95680.00/yr.
