The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Academic Administration and Finance (DAAF) of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) at Columbia University, the Program Manager will manage EALAC's 125th anniversary events and related outreach and fundraising efforts. The incumbent will support publicity efforts for the one-year assignment and help develop, organize, and update EALAC's alumni and constituent database. This work will include creating documentation and transition materials to support the department's longer-term outreach, engagement, and fundraising goals after the appointment concludes.
The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALAC) has long been recognized as an international leader in the study of the histories, literature, cultures, religions, and languages of East Asia. EALAC's coverage has historically comprised the cultures and languages of China, Japan, and Korea. In 2005, the department expanded its expertise to Tibetan Studies, which has become a major field of study at Columbia University, and in 2017, EALAC enlarged its East Asian scope to include the culture, history, and languages of Vietnam. Our language lecturers provide instruction in modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Vietnamese, and our faculty and lecturers also provide instruction in classical Chinese, classical Japanese, kanbun, mixed-script Korean, and classical Tibetan.

Responsibilities
Special Projects (40%)
  • Oversee all strategic and operational duties for EALAC's 125th anniversary, including current event programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty on program selection and design, and on program execution, including budget development and monitoring, logistics and staffing, publicity, and reporting for the 125th anniversary celebration.

Development (20%)
Using the 125th anniversary as a platform for engagement:
  • Proactively identify and support funding opportunities that may advance the department's longer-term programmatic and fundraising goals. Serve as a project-based point of contact for faculty involved in anniversary-related program development, donor engagement, and outreach efforts.
  • Support efforts to position the anniversary year as a foundation for future programs and funding opportunities by identifying potential University and external partners, assisting with grant proposals and gift-related materials, preparing budgets, and coordinating public events connected to the anniversary and related departmental initiatives.

Publicity (20%)
  • Support internal communications related to the 125th anniversary, including preparation of the 125th Anniversary Report, updates to the anniversary section of the departmental website, and publicity materials connected to anniversary programming and related program development.
  • Research and write up the history of the department, coordinating student research assistants in each specialty field to compile lists of all past faculty, their publications, doctoral graduates, and the impacts they have made on the field (including where they were hired and tenured, and their major publications).
  • Assist the DAAF with major publicity campaigns, informational brochures, and digital presentation of material related to departmental initiatives.

Database (10%):
  • Develop, organize, and update EALAC's alumni and constituent database to support the department's 125th-anniversary programming, communications, event registration, outreach, and fundraising activities. Specific responsibilities may include record creation and updates, report generation, communications and event tracking support, workflow design, and coordination with IT and vendors on tools for data access and maintenance.
  • Prepare documentation and provide transition training to department staff to support continued use of the database and related workflows.

Other Duties (10%)
  • Supervise and assign work to student assistants.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Serve as a videographer and documentarian for key programs, events, and initiatives, capturing and producing high-quality visual content that documents activities, highlights impact, and supports communications, outreach, and archival needs.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree and/or its equivalent. Minimum 2 years related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, East and Southeast Asia preferred.
  • Prior program or development experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience in fundraising, development, and grant administration.
