Manager Rf Test Engineer information

What does a Manager RF Test Engineer do?

A Manager RF Test Engineer oversees teams responsible for testing and validating radio frequency (RF) components and systems, ensuring they meet technical and regulatory standards. They develop test strategies, coordinate test plans, troubleshoot issues, and analyze test data to improve product performance. Additionally, they collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams, while also managing project timelines, resources, and personnel. Their work is essential for ensuring RF products, such as wireless devices or communication systems, function reliably and efficiently.

What is the difference between Manager Rf Test Engineer vs Rf Test Engineer?

AspectManager Rf Test EngineerRf Test Engineer
ResponsibilitiesOversees testing teams, manages project timelines, and ensures quality standardsPerforms RF testing, analyzes results, and documents findings
Required SkillsTechnical expertise in RF testing, leadership, project managementStrong RF testing skills, troubleshooting, data analysis
CertificationsRF certifications, possibly PMP or management-related credentialsRF certifications, technical certifications
Work EnvironmentTeam management, coordination with multiple departmentsHands-on testing in labs or field environments

The main difference is that a Manager Rf Test Engineer focuses on leading testing teams and managing projects, while an Rf Test Engineer primarily conducts RF tests and analyzes data. The managerial role involves leadership and oversight, whereas the testing role emphasizes technical execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager RF Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager RF Test Engineer, you need a solid background in RF engineering, signal analysis, and test methodologies, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering and relevant industry experience. Familiarity with RF test equipment (such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers), test automation tools, and certification standards like ISO/IEC 17025 is crucial. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing teams and liaising with stakeholders. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring efficient testing processes, maintaining high product quality, and achieving project goals within technical and organizational requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by a Manager RF Test Engineer, and how can they be addressed?

A Manager RF Test Engineer often encounters challenges such as maintaining high testing accuracy under tight deadlines and managing the integration of new technologies into existing test processes. Effective communication with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is essential to address issues quickly and keep projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on the latest RF testing standards and tools is key to ensuring both compliance and efficiency. Proactively fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the team helps in overcoming these challenges.

Job description

About Oso Semiconductor

Oso Semiconductor is an early-stage fabless semiconductor company developing next-generation mmWave beamforming technology. Founded by UC Berkeley PhDs, our proprietary RFIC architecture delivers 24x power reduction for phased array systems across satellite communication (SATCOM), 5G, and radar. We've raised Series A funding, secured our first defense and commercial customers, and are preparing to scale the team 3X.

The Role

We are looking for an RF Test & Systems Engineer to own the testing, characterization, and system-level validation of our mmWave beamforming chips and phased array platforms. This role sits at the intersection of RF testing, systems design, and applications engineeringyou will prove our silicon works, build the systems around it, and help customers integrate it.

Responsibilities

  • Design, execute, and automate RF bench-top and over-the-air test plans for custom RFIC chipsets and phased array antennas. Own chip-level and system-level characterization.
  • Architect and build phased array evaluation systemsPCB design, antenna integration, packaging interfaces, RF signal chain assembly.
  • Perform EM simulation of phased arrays, RF passives, chip packages, PCBs, and antennas using Ansys HFSS and ADS Momentum. System-level signal chain modeling using MATLAB, Python, or Keysight SystemVue.
  • Develop evaluation kits, reference designs, and technical documentation. Support customer design-in activities.
  • Build and maintain RF test infrastructure including automation scripts (Python), calibration procedures, and measurement workflows.
  • Work with RFIC designers, founding team, and customers to translate test results into design feedback.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years in RF/mmWave testing, system design, or applications engineering.
  • Proficient with RF test equipment: VNAs, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, power meters, and over-the-air test setups.
  • Experience automating test equipment using Python and building repeatable measurement workflows.
  • Experience in high-frequency (>6 GHz) phased array antenna PCB design, layout, and testing using Altium.
  • Comfortable with EM simulation tools (Ansys HFSS, ADS Momentum) for antenna and package analysis.
  • Strong understanding of RF front-end circuit blocks and theory.
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) in EE or significant industry experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Theoretical expertise in multi-antenna wireless systems and phased array beamforming.
  • System-level signal chain modeling (MATLAB, Python, Keysight SystemVue).
  • Prior FAE or customer-facing technical role at a semiconductor company.
  • Experience developing evaluation boards, reference designs, or customer hardware.
  • Familiarity with chip packaging and its impact on RF performance at mmWave.
  • Self-directed: takes ownership, builds what's needed, doesn't wait to be told.

Why Oso

  • Full ownership: Own the test and validation pipeline for a first-of-its-kind mmWave beamforming platform.
  • Bridge role: Your work directly determines how our technology gets adopted by customers.
  • Meaningful equity: Competitive stock option grant with real upside.
  • UC Berkeley DNA: Work alongside PhDs with deep domain expertise.
  • Dual-market: Defense (SATCOM, radar) and commercial (5G).

What We Offer

  • Equity: Stock option grant with 4-year vesting and 1-year cliff.
  • Medical, Dental & Vision: Comprehensive health coverage with employer-sponsored medical, dental, and vision plans.
  • Hybrid Schedule: MondayWednesday in office.
