Preconstruction Manager – Mechanical


Hampton Roads, VA

Excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Engineering professional to join one of Virginia’s longest established mechanical contractors in a key Preconstruction role, offering strong career progression, technical development and long-term stability.


Do you have a strong background in HVAC and mechanical systems? Are you looking to work on complex, high-profile, multi-disciplinary projects while developing your career with a business known for investing in its people and retaining them for the long term?


The company has been established for more than 70 years and delivers complex mechanical projects across commercial, healthcare, industrial, government and specialist construction markets. They are known for their people-first culture, long employee tenure and continued investment in leadership, technology and AI. Due to huge success they are looking to recruit a Preconstruction Manager.


In this role you will work closely with clients, General Contractors, engineers, estimating and operations during the early stages of projects, helping ensure they are technically and commercially set up for success.


This could suit someone currently working in Mechanical Project Management, Preconstruction, Estimating, HVAC Equipment Sales, Mechanical Equipment Sales or Applications Engineering who wants to use their technical knowledge in a broader, project-focused position.


The Role:


  • Manage preconstruction activities from concept through handover
  • Support budgets, conceptual estimating and design development
  • Coordinate HVAC, plumbing and piping system requirements
  • Review equipment selections, specifications and technical designs
  • Support value engineering and constructability reviews
  • Assist with scheduling, logistics and early procurement
  • Work closely with owners, GCs, engineers and internal teams
  • Support the transition from Preconstruction into Operations


The Person:


  • Technical understanding of HVAC / mechanical systems
  • Background in Project Management, Estimating, Preconstruction or technical HVAC / Mechanical Equipment Sales
  • Experience with mechanical equipment, drawings, specifications or system design
  • Knowledge of HVAC, piping, plumbing and/or ductwork
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
  • Ambition to progress towards PE advantageous
