Manager Program Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Manager Program Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager Program Manager, you need strong leadership, project management expertise, and a background in business or a related field, often supported by a bachelor's degree and PMP or similar certification. Familiarity with project management tools like Microsoft Project, Asana, or Jira, as well as budgeting and reporting systems, is typically required. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, and stakeholder management are essential soft skills for overseeing complex programs and guiding teams. These competencies ensure effective program delivery, alignment with organizational goals, and the ability to navigate challenges across multiple projects.

How do Manager Program Managers typically balance overseeing multiple projects while supporting their teams' development?

Manager Program Managers often juggle several large-scale initiatives simultaneously, which requires strong organizational skills and effective delegation. They regularly meet with project leads to monitor progress, troubleshoot issues, and ensure alignment with organizational goals, while also providing mentorship and professional development opportunities for their teams. Striking a balance between delivering results and fostering team growth involves transparent communication, setting clear expectations, and empowering team members to take ownership of their work.

What is a Program Manager?

A Program Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and coordinating multiple related projects within an organization to achieve strategic objectives. They manage the overall program, ensuring that individual projects align with business goals, stay on schedule, and meet budgetary requirements. Program Managers work closely with project managers, stakeholders, and executive leadership to address risks, allocate resources, and facilitate communication across teams.

Are you a strategic leader who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment? Join a team that powers some of the world's most advanced naval platforms and helps deliver critical capabilities that protect those who serve.

We are seeking a highly motivated Program Manager to lead complex, cross-functional programs supporting the design, manufacturing, and delivery of advanced naval power and propulsion solutions. This role is ideal for a collaborative leader who can balance customer expectations, technical execution, financial performance, and schedule commitments while driving operational excellence across the organization.

What You Will Do
  • Lead the execution of a larg program or multiple small programs from contract award through delivery, ensuring alignment with customer requirements, business objectives, and company strategy

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, internal leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, quality, finance, and business development teams

  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations, regulatory requirements, and company policies
Education & Experience Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience managing budgets, costs, schedules, and customer deliverables in a complex environment
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to influence and collaborate across multiple functions and levels of the organization
  • Experience working with ERP systems, project management tools, and financial forecasting
  • PMP certification or advanced degree is a plus
  • Experience with DoD or government contracts preferred

At DRS Naval Power Systems, you'll be part of a mission-focused organization delivering innovative technologies that power and protect the fleet. We offer challenging work, opportunities for growth, and a collaborative environment where your contributions directly impact national security and operational readiness.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
