What is the difference between Manager Pharmacoepidemiology vs Pharmacovigilance Manager?
| Aspect | Manager Pharmacoepidemiology | Pharmacovigilance Manager |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Advanced degree in epidemiology, public health, or related field; experience in data analysis | Background in pharmacology, medicine, or pharmacy; certification in pharmacovigilance often preferred |
| Work Environment | Research-focused, data analysis, study design, and epidemiological assessments | Monitoring drug safety, adverse event reporting, and regulatory compliance |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Pharmaceutical companies, research institutions, regulatory agencies | Pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, regulatory authorities |
While both roles focus on drug safety and effectiveness, the Manager Pharmacoepidemiology primarily conducts epidemiological studies to assess drug utilization and safety in populations. In contrast, the Pharmacovigilance Manager oversees adverse event reporting and compliance to ensure ongoing drug safety post-market. Both roles require specialized knowledge but differ in their core activities and focus areas.

Overview
The Rutgers Pharmacoepidemiology and Treatment Science (PETS) Center (located within the Rutgers Institute for Health, Healthcare Policy and Aging Research) leads, performs, and facilitates innovative, multidisciplinary science related to the use, safety, and effectiveness of medical products (i.e., drugs, biologics, devices, vaccines) and medical interventions in populations. The Rutgers PETS Center vision is to improve the health of populations by producing actionable evidence on the need, use, safety, and effectiveness of interventions and medical products. ThePETS Center pursues its vision through three interconnected missions: 1) Advance rigorous, high-impact research on interventions and medical products across populations, 2) Develop the next generation of scholars and leaders in pharmacoepidemiology and treatment science through rigorous training and transformative mentoring, and 3) Build a culture of collaboration and support that empowers our team to thrive and reach their full potential. Researchers within the PETS Center have great depth of expertise and experience in the analysis of Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance data and the application of social science theory and advanced statistical techniques in large data sets.
The PETS Center builds on strong existing faculty and research infrastructure and enjoys substantial support from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Science (RBHS). RBHS was created during the 2013 integration of the health professional schools from Rutgers University and the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The eight schools, six centers and institutes and a behavioral health care network of RBHS collectively comprise one of America's largest, most comprehensive university-based centers for studying and improving human health and health care. The Institute for Health, RBHS, and the substantial resources of Rutgers University offer a rich collaborative environment for conducting pharmacoepidemiology and health services research. RBHS partners with RWJBarnabas Health, the state's largest healthcare delivery system. Research among these units expands considerably the opportunities for researchers. The Institute for Health, Healthcare Policy and Aging Research has faculty and other researchers with considerable expertise in pharmacoepidemiology the social and clinical sciences, health research and policy, public health, and related fields.
