Job description

Onboard Software Validation and Verification Engineer in  GAC Savannah


Unique Skills:

Background

Gulfstream is seeking an engineer to join our Flight Sciences team and help lead the charge in creating and delivering the world’s finest aviation experience.

Within Flight Sciences, the Software and Performance Products team is responsible for implementing, verifying, validating and certifying flight-critical onboard software, ensuring the necessary levels of reliability for safe aircraft operation. The scope encompasses both flight control systems software (that implement “fly-by-wire” control laws) and applications for aircraft performance prediction and flight mission planning, for use by the customers in operation.

In this role, you will contribute to the full spectrum of those activities, working closely with multi-disciplinary teams of development engineers, including laboratory and flight testing, engaged in the development of future Gulfstream aircraft and expanding current capabilities.

Candidates with additional applicable experience may be eligible for a higher-level position (Technical Specialist I, Technical Specialist II or Technical Specialist III)

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform tasks for the development and certification of safety-critical onboard software that implements control laws in the aircraft control system (“fly-by-wire”).
  • Perform tasks for the development and certification of aircraft performance prediction and mission planning software.
  • Participate in the development and refinement of software requirements.
  • Apply model-based design techniques to support software development.
  • Perform software testing for verification and validation, through desktop simulation, laboratory tests with “hardware in the loop” and flight test activities.
  • Update simulation models and automation scripts used in both software integration labs (SIL) and hardware integration labs (HIL).
  • Perform validation and verification activities to demonstrate software compliance with DO-178C, DO-331 and ARP4754, as required by certification entities (FAA, EASA and international certification institutions). 
  • Enhance and expand software test framework and analysis tool suite.
  • Actively collaborate with teams across Flight Sciences, Labs, Flight Test, and other teams to meet those objectives.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Experience programming with MATLAB and using Simulink to create models. 
  • Proficient with Python scripting with Object Oriented principles and Class hierarchy.
  • Experience with automating tasks and processes.
  • Knowledge of software testing processes and standards.
  • Solid understanding of flight control fundamental principles, closed loop systems, and controller performance tuning.
  • Solid understanding of airplane flight characteristics, first-principles analyses, and airplane performance methods.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong coding skills and software development practices including using requirement management tools.

 

Preferred Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledgeable of Systems Engineering principles of Requirements Management, Validation, Verification, Change Management, Process Assurance and Functional Integration. (ARP4754A & DO-178 experience desired)
  • Experience with Model-Based Engineering development processes, particularly using MathWorks Simulink or similar.
  • Experience with aerospace system test development and result analysis, either in a simulation or integration test environment.
  • Experience building automated CI/CD pipelines to accelerate software delivery cycles.
  • Unix/Linux experience.


 

Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's Degree Engineering or a related curriculum required or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job. 18 months related Engineering experience. Experience credit will be considered for related advance degrees limited to 2 years for Master's and 4 years for PhD in field applicable to the job position. Position Purpose: Performs engineering work related to the investigation and the solution of technical problems associated with research, design, development, service and manufacture of Gulfstream aircraft.

  2. Provides technical assistance to engineering staff and contributes to completion of project milestones .
  3. Responsible for a complex engineering assignment, or a full project of lesser complexity .
  4. Follows established schedules while developing plans for engineering assignments .
  5. Obtains appropriate level of supervisor approvals for work accuracy and adequacy .
  6. Proficiently applies company/organization policies and procedures .
Additional Functions:
  1. Actively works to improve daily processes, and ensures all work meets customer requirements .
  2. Maintains a current and up-to-date knowledge of developments and application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in assigned field of expertise .
Perform other duties as assigned. Other Requirements:
  1. The level of technical skills and abilities appropriate for this grade will be established by each discipline.
  2. Applies knowledge to provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity, using a combination of judgment with defined practices and procedures.
  3. Failure to achieve results, or erroneous decisions or recommendations, may cause delays in program schedules and/or allocation of additional resources.
  4. Ability to convey technical concepts in both written and verbal formats.
  5. Contacts are primarily within the organization, with occasional customer contacts on routine issues.
  6. Works under general supervision for routine tasks of minor complexity.
  7. With supervision/mentorship, can coordinate the activities for lower level engineering staff.
This job requires one to be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
