Job description

WHY JOIN ALO?
Mindful movement. It's at the core of why we do what we do at ALO-it's our calling. Because mindful movement in the studio leads to better living. It changes who yogis are off the mat, making their lives and their communities better. That's the real meaning of studio-to-street: taking the consciousness from practice on the mat and putting it into practice in life.
OVERVIEW
  • We are seeking an experienced Manager of Data Engineering to lead a team responsible for building and maintaining the data pipelines, models, data products, and platform capabilities that support decision-making across Alo.
  • This is a hands-on leadership role combining people management, technical execution, and delivery ownership. You will develop a team of data engineers, translate business priorities into technical plans, and ensure the delivery of reliable, scalable, and well-governed data solutions.
  • The ideal candidate is a strong engineering leader who remains technically hands-on. In addition to coaching the team and managing delivery, you will contribute to solution design, write and review code, and directly support critical data initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of data engineers, setting clear expectations and supporting career growth.
  • Own the team's priorities, roadmap, and delivery commitments across platform and business-facing initiatives.
  • Remain hands-on by designing solutions, writing SQL and Python, reviewing code, and contributing directly to critical projects.
  • Partner with Analytics, Data Science, Product, Technology, and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Oversee the design, development, deployment, and support of reliable batch and real-time data pipelines.
  • Build scalable, reusable data products that translate business needs into trusted datasets, models, and services for analytics, operations, AI/ML, and decision-making.
  • Support the continued evolution of Alo's cloud-based data platform.
  • Strengthen data quality through automated validation, monitoring, alerting, lineage, and clearly defined ownership.
  • Manage cross-functional dependencies, identify risks, remove blockers, and communicate delivery progress.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field.
  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering, software engineering, platform engineering, or related discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience managing or formally leading data engineers.
  • Strong hands-on proficiency in SQL and Python, with recent experience building production data solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance people leadership and delivery management with direct technical contribution.
  • Experience designing, building, and supporting production-grade data pipelines, data products, and platforms.
  • Experience with cloud-based data technologies, preferably AWS.
  • Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, data modeling, data lake, and lakehouse architectures.
  • Experience with modern data technologies such as dbt, Airflow, Redshift, EMR, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, or Kinesis.
  • Experience with batch processing and real-time or event-driven architectures.
  • Experience supporting analytics, personalization, experimentation, or AI/ML use cases preferred.
  • Familiarity with data governance, security, privacy, CCPA, or GDPR preferred.
