Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a Structural Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Responsibilities
  • Develop high-quality detailed design packages.
  • Provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs.
  • Provide expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.
  • Design involves the preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and design engineering deliverables.
  • Work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.
  • Perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities in order to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.
  • Provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes, and standards.
  • Interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.
  • Capable and willing to work in a production environment.

Requirements
  • Education & Years of Experience - Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school and 10+ years of relevant experience with emphasis on Structural Engineering.
  • Citizenship - To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.
  • Clearance - To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.
  • Technical expertise and wide applicating of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.
  • Strong experience with structural evaluations, building modifications, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Experience performing seismic analysis, evaluation, and structural rehabilitation.
  • Proficiency in structural steel and reinforced concrete design.
  • Experience designing with multiple construction materials, including structural steel, concrete, and cold-formed steel.
  • Proficiency in developing structural drawings, including plans, sections, details, and construction notes.
  • Strong experience performing and documenting structural engineering calculations and analyses.
  • Experience with equipment and machine installations, including structural supports and equipment anchorage.
  • Ability to prepare engineering reports, design documentation, construction specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Experience performing or overseeing structural drafting and drawing development.
  • Ability to develop project scopes, design criteria, design bases, functional requirements, schedules, and engineering budgets.
  • Experience coordinating and directing multidisciplinary engineering design teams.
  • Strong knowledge of design reviews, design approvals, configuration/change control, and interdisciplinary design coordination.
  • Experience reviewing and approving contractor technical submittals and material submittals.
  • Ability to perform field inspections and field verification to confirm construction complies with approved engineering designs.
  • Experience providing technical oversight of outside engineering firms and contractors.
  • Ability to independently plan, execute, and manage structural engineering activities from initial scope through construction.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, analytical, and engineering judgment skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interface with clients, engineering teams, production personnel, support organizations, management, contractors, and craft/hourly employees.
  • Ability and willingness to work in an active industrial/production environment.

Desired Skills
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred

The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation's only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium.
