Job Summary
Under general supervision, and in the context of emergency services, employee is responsible for providing critical support and interventions to effectively address behavioral health, intellectual disabilities and substance use emergencies challenging individuals and families in our community. Interventions include crisis intervention, emergency evaluations/ preadmission screenings, crisis stabilization, and case management services to those individuals at risk of hospitalization. Employee must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations. Employee provides after-hours crisis intervention services on a scheduled basis.
Employee must exercise considerable initiative and judgment in the effective and efficient administration of departmental programs. Employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in contact with staff, persons served, families, public, and service provides. Reports to the Emergency Services Clinical Supervisor.
Job Responsibilities
  • Responsible for providing life-saving intervention services, pre-admission screenings for psychiatric hospitalization, de-escalations, hospitalization, court ordered detentions, restoration to competency outpatient services and critical incident stress management community responses.
  • Provides client direct assessment and referral services, individual and family crisis interventions and preadmission screenings to determine the level of care needed.
  • Facilitates psychiatric inpatient voluntary and involuntary hospitalization, admission to crisis stabilization units or ambulatory crisis stabilization programs.
  • Performs comprehensive assessments to identify needs of, and resources to benefit, persons experiencing crisis or persons discharging from hospitals or crisis stabilization programs.
  • Demonstrates sound clinical skills in risk assessment, safety planning and crisis intervention.
  • Triages all requests for crisis services to determine level of intervention required: pre-admission evaluation screenings for psychiatric hospitalization, crisis intervention, detox, medical or police intervention, outpatient counseling, other intra-agency services or community referral.
  • Provides all services in accordance with current procedural guidelines to include timely responses to requests for service and record keeping/reporting to demonstrate same, contacting other individuals for collateral information and advising current treatment provider and/ or referral source of intervention outcomes.
  • Operates from a recovery-based philosophy emphasizing hope, choice, and empowerment, personal responsibility, community focus and connectedness.
  • Adheres to all applicable state, federal, regional, local and agency regulations and requirements as applicable to emergency services. Examples include, but are not limited to: Virginia Code, DBHDS licensure and performance contract, Regional Reinvestment Project protocols, 42 CFR, HIPAA, Human Rights, reimbursement requirements and Medicaid and Medicare standards.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with officials of the criminal and civil justice system, hospital staff, and other agencies and individuals involved with emergency services and comprehensive crisis management.
  • Provides clinical services as permitted by individual competencies and oversight entities. These would include but not be limited to Crisis Intervention and Crisis Stabilization.
  • Conducts assessments of needs and planning services to include developing an individualized service plan.
  • Possesses knowledge of the civil commitment process
  • Provides aggressive outreach to individuals referred to the BH for services post hospital discharge, and attendance at commitment/re-commitment hearings.
  • Provides additional case management services such as coordinating inpatient discharge planning, assisting people in investigating a variety of resources and living alternatives, and pursuing education and entitlement opportunities in the context of providing emergency services.
  • Keeps informed as to current literature and legislation related to temporary detention orders, voluntary and involuntary admissions, and guardianship as they affect mental health and emergency services.
  • Provides after-hours, holiday and weekend on-call coverage for emergency services and crisis intervention on a regular rotating basis.
  • OTHER DUTIES ASSIGNED.

Requirements
Job Requirements
Essential
• Must pass all required Background Checks.
• Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License with reliable transportation and driving record acceptable to agency insurance carrier.
• Must obtain a TB test with satisfactory results within 30 days of employment, and yearly thereafter as required by licensing authority.
Education
Educational attainment of a Master's or Doctoral degree with an associated professional license or educational attainment that would be required for the following: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Clinical Psychologist (LCP) Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist MD/DO, Bachelors Prepared Registered Nurse (BSN) with five years of experience; and be certified by DBHDS as a Certified Preadmission Screening Clinician (as defined by the Code of Virginia 37.2.809).
Experience
• Minimum of two years supervised experience in providing mental health services.
With a Sign on Bonus of Licensed Eligible:$5,000 and Licensed : $7,000
