Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities.
Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel.
Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.

Job Description

JOB DUTIES

  • Inspects rough, semi-finished, or finished machined steel forgings, rings, RR wheels, and other products in the Machine Shops to ascertain that they possess proper surface quality and are free of forging seams, slag seams, burnt areas, etc.; and meet the dimensional specifications required by the Customer, as indicated on prints, sketches, written instructions, or as specified by the Chief Inspector.
  • Inspects both material manufactured in this Plant and material shipped into the Machine Shops from outside for machining.
  • Rejects material having surface defects or failing to meet dimensional specifications, withholding it from further processing, or shipment until examined by the Chief Inspector.
  • Prepares and signs rejection reports for all material rejected.
  • Is completely familiar with proper inspection procedures and tools, including inside and outside calipers, micrometer gauges, rules, baroscope, tapes, templates, etc.; and performs inspections from blueprints, sketches, etc. Must demonstrate proficiency through the satisfactory completion of “quality examinations” which address the basic issues.
  • May be required to prepare reports of inspections for the use of the Metallurgical Department in Quality Control.
  • Required to deal with Customer's representatives in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned by Supervision.

POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Visual/Dimensional inspection experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications from drawings.
  • Proficient in using precision measuring tools.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ALL POSITIONS:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Must be available to work all three shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Must demonstrate self-motivation and problem-solving in a fast-paced setting
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks at one time.
  • Must be able to interact with outside Inspectors.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and work in various weather conditions.
