The Network Engineering Manager is a leader in the Engineering department and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day engineering operations, tactical design, and capacity management of the company’s carrier-grade fiber optic and transport network infrastructure. Operating under the strategic direction of the Engineering Director, this role requires a mature, highly autonomous leader with deep optical engineering expertise who can manage the execution of infrastructure initiatives with limited day-to-day supervision. Serving as a critical operational link between hands-on engineering and leadership, this role manages the implementation of capital expenditure (CapEx) projects, serves as a high-tier operational escalation point, and prepares data-driven network performance and capacity reports for senior leadership.

Responsibilities include technical management, technical understanding, analyzing information, informing others, staffing, problem solving, developing budgets, coordination, strategic planning and quality management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the creation and management of all projects within Network Engineering.
  • Oversee and determine timeframes for major Engineering projects including system updates, HW/SW upgrades, grooms/migrations, etc.
  • Manages network capacity reports on a weekly basis.
  • Manages the evaluation and testing of new technologies to provide recommendations to upper management.
  • Coordinates with engineering staff for daily work assignments, reports and analytics as it relates to the Network Engineering daily workload.
  • Provides departmental reports to upper management as needed.
  • Develops budgets and cost benefit analysis for network based projects.
  • Assists in current and future optical network designs.
  • Organizes and communicates departmental objectives to the group in an effective manner.
  • Provides oversight and input on the process workflows for Network Engineering ticket activities and implementation of new technologies.
  • Maintains network wide strategies by managing staff and researching and implementing strategic technological solutions.
  • Manages all Lab testing projects as well as the production of all supporting documentation.
  • Ensures the proper creation, review and implementation of change management procedures are followed and distributed as needed by Network Engineering.
  • Performs other duties requested by the Director of Engineering or as business needs dictate.
  • First line escalation for the Network Engineering on-call person.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Coherent Optics & High-Speed Transport: Experience deploying 400G, 800G, and 1.2T coherent optical technologies across long-haul and metro networks.
  • Advanced knowledge of Colorless, Directionless, Contentionless (CDC) ROADM architectures and flex-grid spectrum management.
  • Advanced knowledge of SONET and DWDM based fiber optic networks, including capabilities and functionality of the Ciena OME6500, Ciena 5430 Reconfigurable Switching System, and CISCO 15454 platforms.
  • Operating knowledge of inventory management and order processing applications.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate creative and organizational skills in order to work through projects producing accurate and effective end results.
  • Ability to collect data, establish facts, define problem(s), and evaluate seriousness of problem(s).
  • Maintains positive attitude towards customers, co-workers and management.
  • Maintains honesty and integrity in all circumstances.
  • Effective time management.
  • Professional and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to manage remote staff.
  • Display an advanced knowledge in the management of engineering and technical staff.
  • Will be required to travel to other markets for special projects or training.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must have valid motor vehicle operator’s license and a responsible driving record.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field is often required. Extensive experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience: Typically, 5+ years of experience in network operations, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Professional or Expert level certifications (e.g., CCNP, JNCIP) are a major plus but not required if equivalent experience exists.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate by typing, reading, talking, and listening effectively. The employee will be required to work for extended periods of time at a desk on a computer and must be able to maneuver through office spaces as needed.
