Senior RF Electrical Developer

Profound Medical

Mississauga, ON • On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 29 days ago

Job description

Salary:

Our mission is to Profoundly change the standard of care by creating a tomorrow where clinicians can confidently ablate tissue with precision; a tomorrow where patients have access to safe and effective treatment options, so they can quickly return to their daily lives. Changing the standard of care is part of our fabric. We are a group of energetic, problem-solvers focused on innovation and looking to change the world. We are changing the paradigm for treating diseases such as prostate cancer by using real-time MR Imaging, thermal ultrasound and close-loop temperature feedback control, to gently ablate the diseased tissue with minimal side effects.

If you share our values and want to work in a collaborative results-focused culture and want to make a profound impact in healthcare and your career, here is your chance.

General Accountability

We are seeking a Senior RF Electrical Developer to lead the design and integration of MRI-compatible medical devices that operate safely and effectively inside the MRI bore. This role focuses on ensuring that electronic systems function reliably in the presence of strong static magnetic fields, rapidly switching gradients, and high-power RF pulses.

You will be responsible for developing RF-safe system architectures, mitigating electromagnetic interference, and ensuring compliance with MRI safety standards while enabling high-performance device operation in a highly constrained and challenging environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of MRI-compatible electronic and RF subsystems, including signal paths, filtering, shielding, and grounding strategies
  • Develop systems that are immune to MRI RF pulses and gradient-induced interference
  • Design and validate signal generation systems for high powered ultrasound that operate reliably within the MRI environment
  • Ensure RF safety compliance, including mitigation of induced currents, cable heating, and unintended coupling
  • Design filtered and shielded interconnects, including cable traps, baluns, and feedthroughs to prevent RF coupling
  • Perform EMC/EMI analysis and mitigation in the MRI environment (64300+ MHz depending on field strength)
  • Collaborate with system and mechanical teams to ensure MR-conditional design, including material selection, cable routing, and enclosure design
  • Develop and execute test methods for MRI compatibility, including phantom testing, in-bore validation, and artifact evaluation
  • Analyze and minimize image artifacts caused by device operation
  • Work closely with clinical and regulatory teams to support MR safety classification (MR Safe / MR Conditional) per standards such as ASTM F2503
  • Troubleshoot complex system interactions between the device and MRI system
  • Contribute to system architecture decisions balancing performance, safety, and usability

Education

Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering or a related discipline.

Key Attributes

Required:

  • 7+ years of experience in RF/system design, preferably in MRI-compatible or electromagnetically harsh environments
  • Strong understanding of RF coupling, shielding, grounding, and filtering techniques
  • Experience designing systems exposed to high electromagnetic fields and transient interference
  • Hands-on experience with RF test equipment (VNA, spectrum analyzer, oscilloscope)
  • Experience with system-level integration and debugging, not just component design
  • Solid understanding of signal integrity and noise mitigation in sensitive measurement systems

Desired:

  • Direct experience designing devices used inside MRI scanners
  • Familiarity with MRI environment challenges:
  • Static magnetic field (B0)
  • Gradient switching (dB/dt effects)
  • RF transmit field (B1) coupling
  • Experience with RF safety techniques: cable traps, RF chokes, floating designs, optical isolation
  • Knowledge of ASTM and IEC standards related to MRI safety (e.g., ASTM F2182 for RF heating)
  • Experience with fiber optic communication to eliminate conductive pathways
  • Familiarity with low-noise analog front-end design in high-noise environments
  • Experience minimizing MRI image artifacts from active devices

We thank you for your interest in Profound Medical. Please note only candidates that are short-listed will be contacted.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $120,000 - $150,000 CAD. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and job-related factors. This role may also be eligible for participation in the companys benefits programs, such as a group RRSP and medical benefits paid by the employer.

We strive to promote diversity and equal opportunity in the workplace and encourage applications from all qualified individuals, including those with disabilities.
