Job description

Under limited direction, contributes to the growth and profitability of energy product line through underwriting, marketing and portfolio management. Requires specialist knowledge of technical underwriting of downstream Oil & Gas and Power Generation business. Demonstrates strong analytical, marketing and business development capabilities.

Responsibilities:

    • Underwrites downstream, midstream and upstream Oil & Gas, Power Generation and Heavy Industries insurance and reinsurance business within their Underwriting Authority
    • Reports to the Energy Regional Product Line Manager. Selects and underwrites business by making analytical, data-driven decisions based on the information provided
    • Key contributor to development of the business and strategy plans based on insights and trends derived from research, and information derived from market interactions and relationships
    • Leverages expertise and insights from research and client interactions to advise senior management and leadership on strategy;
    • Works cross-functionally with counterparts in other functions and lines of business (e.g. Risk Engineering, Claims, Actuarial, Finance, Operations, Exposure Management) to achieve objectives optimizing company performance
    • Key driver and thought leader for product development and refinement based on data insights, research, use of AI and client interaction;
    • Manages and develops own portfolio of Clients and Producers
    • Develops and maintains exceptional market presence based on status as “go-to” and a household name with brokers for the line of business, including established trading relationships with brokers at leadership level.
    • Constantly looks to strengthen these relationships, develop new ones to maintain and win business
    • Acts as representative for the firm. Advocate for Liberty, seeks cross-selling and promotional opportunities.
    • Contributes and participates in team meetings and strategic objectives
    • Spends a proportion of time on designing/providing technical training for Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters as well as mentoring with a view to leading into a management position
    • Maintains and develops status as demonstrated thought-leader, e.g. by taking appointments on relevant external bodies, appearing on panel discussions, media interviews, competent use of AI and GPT resources
    • Fulfils compliance requirements of role, escalating where necessary
    • Proactive team collaboration with colleagues across the globe who underwrite the same line of business

  • Minimum 5 years technical underwriting experience of the energy classes
  • Advanced knowledge of Underwriting and Risk Engineering concepts, practices and procedures
  • The ability to effectively interact with Brokers and internal departments
  • Ability to travel overseas when necessary
  • Fluency in English & Spanish with some knowledge of Portuguese required
  • Ability to collaborate effectively as a team player across departments and geographies
  • Competent negotiation, analytical and decision making capabilities and skills
  • Established strategic and marketing capabilities
  • IT/AI competency
  • Understanding of insurance performance metrics and financial statements
  • Bachelor's Degree (preferably of an engineering designation) with progress or achievement of professional examinations– e.g. CPCU or ACII (preferred) 

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
