Senior Magnetics Engineer

Amca

El Segundo, CA • On-site

$150K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 2 days ago

Job description

Amca is building America's new industrial base. Since the 1990s, our ability to build new aviation and military systems and maintain the ones we already have has eroded. Today, the gap between what the nation needs to produce and what it is capable of producing is the largest it has been in generations.
To help close that gap, Amca rapidly develops and manufactures new critical components and subsystems required to build and sustain the planes, military vehicles, and core infrastructure America needs. Today, we operate seven factories nationwide, including our advanced prototyping and testing headquarters in El Segundo, and deliver avionics, hydraulic, and electrical components for platforms such as the F-35, F-16, F/A-18, 737MAX, 787, A320neo, A321, Mk-48, and M1 Abrams.
Overview
The Senior Magnetics Engineer leads the design of Amca's magnetic components and electromagnetic devices. You will design transformers, inductors, solenoids, motors, and magnetic actuators for power electronics and fluid control hardware, pairing magnetic and thermal analysis with manufacturable, high-reliability designs. This is a specialized design role for an engineer who lives at the intersection of electromagnetics, materials, and thermal performance.
Responsibilities
Magnetic Design and Analysis
  • Lead the design of transformers, inductors, solenoids, motors, and magnetic actuators.
  • Perform magnetic analysis and FEA to predict flux, force, inductance, and losses.
  • Model core loss, copper loss, saturation, and thermal behavior across the operating envelope.
  • Select magnetic materials, wire, insulation systems, and core geometries.

Documentation and Data Packages
  • Produce winding specifications, magnetic component drawings, and technical data packages.
  • Author design requirements and interface control documents for magnetic assemblies.
  • Maintain design records and support configuration management.

Integration and Cross-functional Support
  • Partner with electrical, mechanical, and test teams through build and qualification.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective action on magnetic design and field issues.
  • Review the work of junior engineers and mentor them on magnetics design methods.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years designing magnetic components or electromagnetic devices in aerospace, defense, or a comparable high-reliability industry.
  • Strong command of electromagnetics, magnetic materials, and thermal fundamentals.
  • Experience with magnetic FEA tools such as ANSYS Maxwell or comparable software.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry a magnetic design from requirements through qualification.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Experience designing high-frequency magnetics for power conversion.
  • Experience with solenoid or magnetic actuator design for fluid control hardware.
  • Familiarity with DO-160 environmental qualification and relevant MIL-STD requirements.
  • Experience working across multiple manufacturing sites or factories.

Annual Salary Range
$150,000-$250,000 USD
