Job description

Job Title

Oversee and perform the installation, maintenance, and fabrication of traffic signs and pavement markings along Town-maintained roads.

Essential Functions

Fabricate, design, repair, and install traffic signs and assemblies; apply pavement markings using latex paint and/or thermoplastic materials.

Knowledge of installing signs and pavement markings in accordance with the Town's sign ordinances and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.

Set up and lead MUTCD-compliant, temporary work zones.

Maintain latex printers, cutters, various hand tools, and other related equipment (roller brushers hand torch).

Provides the Traffic Operations Coordinator with information and data related to the installation of traffic control devices signs and pavement markings along Town-maintained roadways.

Respond to various emails, phone calls, and resident inquiries about signs and markings related issues.

Coordinates and oversees weekly staff schedules for maintenance and installation of traffic control devices, signs, pavement markings.

Provide assistance to the signal team to install rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB) for mid crosswalks, as needed.

Maintains records and supplies; research material costs; obtains price quotes; coordinates deliveries of materials; creates work orders and assigning tasks; maintains and edits daily log of field activities; responds to emails and phone calls.

Manage inventory, obtain quotes for supplies/materials, manage material deliveries, create work orders, and quality review maintenance logs.

Plans and conducts training for lower-level technicians on shop equipment and safety related items.

Contributes to employee performance reviews and keep records of performance documentation.

Schedules the Sign Shop team's weekly work assignments.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

This position requires supervising and monitoring the performance of other employees.

The work is typically performed in the field, requiring intermittent periods of standing or stooping. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

The work is typically performed in a variety of work environments and requires the ability to traverse adverse terrain, work in heat, cold and other weather conditions typically encountered in an outdoor environment. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • MUTCD, town policies and ordinances, NCDOT standards pertaining to the maintenance and installation of signs.
  • Geography of the Town.
  • Occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to signs and markings.
  • Effective supervisory techniques.
  • Intricate sign design and fabrication.
  • Thermoplastic application, sign rolling and post pulling.
  • Operating a bucket truck and various hand tools.
  • Mathematics and measurements.

Ability to:

  • Read and interpret maps and plans, and compile data.
  • Apply mathematical concepts including fractions, percentages, and ratios.
  • Use Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, or similar tools
  • Prepare written reports, letters, and summaries with correct grammar and formatting.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing with other employees and the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and customers
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise the work of assigned staff.
  • Model behaviors that are consistent with our values of RESPECT.

Education:

High school Diploma or a GED equivalent required.

Experience:

A minimum of 3-4 years of progressive working experience in traffic signs and markings with practical field applications. Supervision experience or the ability to effectively lead a team. See IMSA certification requirements below.

Supplemental Information

A valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina or the ability to readily obtain one.

IMSA Signs and Markings Level II Certification.

The ability to obtain IMSA Signs and Markings Level III Certification within 4-5 years.

This classification has been designated as Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

This position is designated as non-exempt and subject to FLSA overtime rules.
