Job Overview

The Research Technician will work in the Chemistry Department, in the biochemistry laboratory of Professor Esther Braselmann. Core research areas in the Braselmann lab include molecular biology, tissue culture and fluorescence microscopy. The Research Technician will support the research program in the lab through lab management and performing research tasks.

Lab management tasks will be performed in close coordination with Dr. Braselmann. These tasks will support the day-to-day lab operations and include ordering materials, maintaining inventories and databases, ensuring that safety procedures are up-to-date, and serving as the primary contact for vendors and suppliers. A core value of the lab is the involvement of students at all levels in the research program. Therefore, the research technician is expected to work closely and collaboratively with students. This includes overseeing and coordinating access to common equipment, training students in common techniques, overseeing onboarding of students in the lab, ensuring that inventories of research outcomes are up-to-date (data organization, fridge/freezer organization and inventory) and supporting students in day-to-day trouble shooting of common techniques.

The research technician will also support the research program by performing experiments and executing independent research. Research goals will be identified and designed in close consultation with Dr. Braselmann and will advance the broad research direction of all lab members. A preferred skillset for this work includes molecular cloning, tissue culture, and general biochemistry techniques.

Work Interactions

The Research Technician will report directly to Dr. Esther Braselmann, and all work will be performed in the Braselmann lab, supporting research goals in the lab. The Research Technician will work closely and collaboratively with students in the Braselmann lab that work under supervision of Dr. Braselmann. The goal of these interactions will be to advance the research program while giving students at all levels the opportunity to participate in the research enterprise, a core value of the Braselmann lab. The Research Technician will also perform lab management tasks that include serving as the primary contact with vendors and suppliers. Additionally, the Research Technician will interact with Georgetown University EH&S and maintain existing safety protocols, maintain records of student training, and maintain protocols and lab procedures. Interactions with members of other labs in the Chemistry department and other departments will be frequent, as research equipment is often shared.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A college / B.A. degree in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field and 3-5 years' experience required.

  • Experience in a research laboratory setting in the field of biochemistry or a related field is required.

  • Experience in tissue culture and molecular biology is required.

  • Experience in leadership is required. This can be demonstrated in different ways, such as hands-on mentoring, training other researchers in techniques, and/or developing protocols and procedures that other researchers execute.

Preferred Requirements and Qualifications

  • Experience in microscopy and image

  • Experience in laboratory management

Pay Range:

The projectedsalary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$41,926.00 - $65,090.00

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
