Manager Island information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Island Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Island Manager, you need strong leadership, operational management experience, and a background in hospitality or property management, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with property management systems, budgeting software, and health and safety regulations is essential. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are critical soft skills for coordinating staff and ensuring guest satisfaction in a remote environment. These skills are vital to efficiently oversee island operations, ensure guest and staff well-being, and maintain the property's standards.

What is a Manager Island?

A Manager Island typically refers to a professional responsible for overseeing operations, staff, and resources on an island property or resort. Their duties often include managing hospitality services, coordinating maintenance and logistics, ensuring guest satisfaction, and supervising budgets. This role requires strong leadership and organizational skills, as well as the ability to handle unique challenges that come with remote island environments. Managers must also ensure compliance with local regulations and maintain high standards of safety and service. Prior experience in hospitality or property management is usually preferred for this position.

What are some common challenges faced by a Manager on an island property, and how can they be addressed?

Managers of island properties often face unique logistical challenges, such as coordinating deliveries and supplies, managing remote staff, and ensuring guest satisfaction despite limited resources. Building strong relationships with local vendors and investing in staff training can help mitigate these challenges. Additionally, flexibility and creative problem-solving are crucial, as weather conditions or transportation delays can impact operations. Managers who proactively plan for contingencies and foster a collaborative team environment tend to be most successful in this unique setting.

Job description

Multi-Trade Commercial Facilities Technician Across Hawaii

Company: Island Facility Services
Salary/Pay Rate: $30.00โ€“$37.00 per hour
Location: Hawaii-based preferred. Technicians generally dispatch from home or company vehicle and travel directly to commercial job sites. Regular inter-island travel may be required depending on project needs.
Job/Employment Type: Full Time
Project Scope: Commercial facility maintenance, repairs, tenant improvements, light construction, and multi-trade service work across Hawaii
Mandatory Licenses & Certifications: None required

The Opportunity

Island Facility Services is seeking a skilled General Maintenance Technician to support commercial maintenance and repair work across Hawaii. This is a hands-on, multi-trade role for someone who can troubleshoot problems, complete quality repairs, and work independently across active retail, restaurant, hospitality, and commercial facilities.

This is not a desk or shop-based position. Most technicians dispatch from home or from their company vehicle, travel directly to job sites, and work across commercial locations throughout the islands. The ideal candidate has strong mechanical ability, practical construction or maintenance experience, and the flexibility to handle a wide range of repair needs, from patching and painting to tile, basic plumbing, light electrical, doors, fixtures, and small tenant improvement projects.

You will join a growing company with a True Ohana culture, steady commercial work, and the opportunity to expand your skills through training, certifications, and hands-on field experience.

How You Will Make an Impact
  • Perform commercial maintenance, repair, and light construction work across retail, restaurant, hospitality, and commercial facilities.

  • Troubleshoot and complete repairs across multiple trades, including basic plumbing, light electrical, patching, painting, tile repair, doors, fixtures, hardware, and general building repairs.

  • Handle small projects from start to finish, including diagnosing the issue, identifying needed materials, completing the repair, and communicating status clearly.

  • Support tenant improvements, small remodels, overnight work, and time-sensitive commercial projects when needed.

  • Travel directly to job sites from home or company vehicle and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Support inter-island projects when needed, including work on Oahu, Maui, Big Island, Kauai, or other locations based on client needs.

  • Help Island Facility Services self-perform more work in-house instead of relying on subcontractors.

  • Maintain safe, clean, and professional job sites while working in active commercial environments.

  • Communicate clearly with managers, clients, and internal teams on work order status, materials, issues, and next steps.

  • Respond with urgency to emergency service needs, including after-hours commercial issues when required.

Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in commercial maintenance, general construction, facilities repair, handyman services, or a related trade.

  • Strong mechanical ability and practical troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience with several of the following: patching, painting, drywall repair, tile repair, basic plumbing, light electrical, doors, fixtures, hardware, framing, cabinetry, or general building repairs.

  • Ability to read and follow work orders, identify needed materials, and complete tasks with minimal rework.

  • Ability to work independently in the field without daily direct supervision.

  • Willingness to dispatch from home or company vehicle and travel directly to commercial job sites.

  • Willingness to travel inter-island as needed for project work or service coverage.

  • Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to operate a company vehicle or travel between job sites as required.

  • Professional communication skills when interacting with clients, managers, and field teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in commercial facility maintenance, general construction, tenant improvements, or multi-trade service work.

  • Experience working in active retail, restaurant, hospitality, grocery, mall, or commercial environments.

  • Ability to complete higher-finish work such as drywall finishing, tile, cabinetry, trim, ceiling grid, or small remodel scopes.

  • Experience with commercial doors, storefronts, basic hardware, glazing support, or related repair work.

  • Experience reading basic plans, prints, schematics, or project notes.

  • Trade school, technical training, OSHA, lift, fall protection, or related safety certifications.

  • Experience mentoring helpers, junior technicians, or small crews.

  • Ability to support overnight, emergency, or time-sensitive commercial work when required.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $30.00โ€“$37.00 per hour, based on experience and skill level.

  • Bi-weekly pay cycle.

  • Overtime potential.

  • Emergency work may include additional pay incentives where applicable.

  • Comprehensive health package including Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.

  • Paid Time Off for holidays, vacation, and sick leave.

  • Company vehicle access where applicable.

  • Professional technology package, including company-provided smartphone or tablet.

  • Travel support, including relocation assistance and per diem for remote projects where applicable.

  • Personal tool replacement program and uniforms provided.

  • Paid training and certifications, including OSHA, Fall Protection, lift training, manufacturer training, and other role-relevant programs.
