What is a manager in training?

A Manager In Training (MIT) is an entry-level management position designed to prepare individuals for leadership roles within a company. The program typically involves hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to various aspects of the business, such as operations, customer service, and team management. The goal is to equip trainees with the skills and knowledge needed to successfully manage a team or department upon completion. Manager In Training positions are common in retail, hospitality, and other service-oriented industries. Successful MITs often move into assistant manager or manager roles after finishing the program.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a manager in training, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Manager In Training, you need foundational leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and a relevant educational background, often a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, scheduling software, and basic financial tools is commonly required, and some programs may prefer or require management training certifications. Strong communication, adaptability, and team-building skills help candidates stand out as they learn to motivate staff and resolve workplace challenges. These skills and qualities are vital for developing effective management practices and preparing for higher leadership responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by manager in training candidates during the program, and how can they overcome them?

Manager In Training (MIT) candidates often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new responsibilities, balancing hands-on tasks with learning leadership skills, and managing time effectively across different departments. It's common to feel stretched as you transition from individual contributor to supervisor, especially when learning to lead a team and make strategic decisions. To overcome these challenges, candidates should actively seek feedback, prioritize open communication with their mentors, and take initiative in problem-solving. Building strong relationships with team members and demonstrating adaptability can also help accelerate growth and success in the program.

Job description

Are you an experienced hospitality leader who's ready for the next step in your career?

The Hampton Inn by Hilton in downtown Brigham City is seeking a dependable, hands-on Assistant General Manager to partner with our General Manager in leading a high-performing team and delivering exceptional guest experiences. This is more than a typical AGM position—it's an opportunity to learn every aspect of hotel operations while preparing for future General Manager opportunities within Hilton.

Our hotel features 73 guest rooms and prides itself on providing outstanding hospitality, maintaining Hilton brand standards, and creating a positive, supportive work environment where every team member is valued.

If you're someone who enjoys solving problems, coaching employees, building strong teams, and taking ownership, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

As our Assistant General Manager, you'll play a key leadership role in the day-to-day operation of the hotel. You'll work alongside the General Manager while also confidently leading the hotel in their absence.

Responsibilities include:

  • Learning every department so you can confidently assist wherever needed

  • Leading hotel operations during evenings, weekends, and whenever the General Manager is away

  • Coaching, training, and developing team members

  • Assisting with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new employees

  • Creating weekly employee schedules and helping ensure proper staffing levels

  • Conducting team meetings and helping build a positive workplace culture

  • Organizing employee appreciation events, recognition programs, and team incentives

  • Handling guest concerns professionally and resolving issues quickly

  • Responding to Hilton Guest Assistance cases and Stay Experience reviews

  • Supporting employee relations by addressing concerns and helping resolve workplace issues

  • Assisting with sales efforts, group business, and community relationships

  • Serving as the on-call manager when necessary

  • Helping ensure Hilton brand standards are consistently maintained throughout the property

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who naturally leads by example and enjoys being part of the team rather than simply managing from behind a desk.

You should be:

  • Trustworthy, dependable, and accountable

  • A confident leader who can motivate and support others

  • Calm under pressure and an excellent problem solver

  • Organized and able to manage multiple priorities

  • Passionate about providing outstanding guest service

  • Comfortable making decisions independently when needed

  • Flexible with scheduling, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and occasional on-call responsibilities

  • Willing to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed

Why Join Our Team?

This position offers the opportunity to work side-by-side with an experienced General Manager while gaining hands-on experience in every area of hotel operations. If your long-term goal is to become a General Manager, you'll receive valuable mentoring and real leadership experience that prepares you for that next step.

At Hampton by Hilton, we believe our people make the difference. We offer a supportive, team-focused environment where your ideas matter, your leadership is valued, and your growth is encouraged.

If you're ready to build your hospitality career and make a meaningful impact every day, we'd love to hear from you.

Compensation:

$16 - $18 hourly

Responsibilities:
  • Support the general manager in the daily operation of the hotel to ensure that all guest service standards are met
  • Facilitates management of the hotel's human resources functions, such as HR administration, turnover control, staff motivation, and employee development and retention
  • Ensure that all local, state, and federal rules and regulations, as well as any corporate or brand-established policies and practices, are followed
  • Propose adjustments that will increase hotel profitability by assessing department performance and identifying issue areas

Qualifications:
  • This role requires a strong emphasis on putting the guest first and providing exceptional customer service
  • Showcase exceptional organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • 3+ years of experience working in a hotel or the hospitality industry required
  • Previous management or supervisory experience in hospitality is required

  • Hotel experience is strongly preferred

  • Experience with Hilton hotels or Hilton brand standards is a plus

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills

  • Strong customer service and conflict-resolution abilities

  • High school diploma or GED required
