Job description

PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR (PLS)

Pay: $55,214.67 - $85,674.67 per year

Work Location: Roosevelt, UT (relocation assistance provided)

Position Summary

The Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) is responsible for planning, managing, supervising, and certifying land surveying projects in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and professional standards. This position provides responsible charge over surveying operations, ensures the accuracy and quality of survey deliverables, mentors survey personnel, and works collaboratively with engineers, project managers, clients, contractors, and public agencies.

The Professional Land Surveyor is expected to uphold the highest standards of professional ethics while delivering accurate, timely, and cost-effective surveying services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee all phases of boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS, construction, subdivision, and control surveys.
  • Serve as the Surveyor of Record and provide responsible charge for survey projects requiring professional licensure.
  • Review, certify, sign, and seal plats, maps, legal descriptions, records of survey, subdivision plats, and other surveying documents as required by law.
  • Conduct boundary analysis utilizing deeds, plats, title reports, easements, right-of-way documents, historical records, and other legal evidence.
  • Supervise field crews and office survey staff to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and accurately.
  • Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans.
  • Coordinate survey activities with engineering, planning, environmental, and construction teams.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of survey calculations, mapping, and deliverables.
  • Operate or supervise the use of GPS/GNSS, robotic total stations, digital levels, UAV/drone mapping systems (where applicable), laser scanners, and other survey equipment.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, GIS software, and other survey processing software.
  • Maintain accurate project records, field notes, calculations, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, utility companies, government agencies, and regulatory authorities.
  • Assist with proposal preparation, fee estimates, business development, and client relationship management.
  • Mentor Survey Technicians, Instrument Operators, Crew Chiefs, and Survey Interns.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety requirements and company safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in the State of Utah.
  • Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible land surveying experience.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to obtain licensure in additional states as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of boundary law, easement interpretation, title research, and legal principles governing land surveying.
  • Strong understanding of Utah surveying statutes, administrative rules, and standards of practice.
  • Proficiency with modern surveying equipment including GNSS/GPS, robotic total stations, digital levels, and data collectors.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, Carlson Survey, GIS software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management abilities.
  • Ability to supervise multiple survey crews and manage concurrent projects.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and client service.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering team.

Physical Requirements

This position requires both office and field work. Employees must be able to:

  • Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
  • Lift and carry survey equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Stand, bend, climb, and kneel for extended periods.
  • Operate company vehicles safely.

Working Conditions

The Professional Land Surveyor will divide time between office and field environments. Occasional overnight travel may be required. Work may involve exposure to construction sites, traffic, rugged terrain, and adverse weather conditions.
