Summary:

The Formulator is responsible for all aspects of the technical product and process development for solid dosage form (capsules, tablets, and powders). This role effectively utilizes standard best practices and procedures in product and process development. Supports technology advancements to drive innovation and point of difference for the brands. Interfaces with Marketing, Manufacturing, Technical Operations, Quality, Purchasing and other cross-functional areas to accomplish project goals.


Your primary activities will include but are not limited to:


  • Formulator needs to develop prototype samples, plans for scale up batches for stability test, prepares product samples for stability test, stores and records samples in laboratory.
  • Assures that materials used and materials manufactured meet written specifications for physical and chemical attributes necessary for product manufacture.
  • Formulator keeps all equipment and tools clean and in their proper storage area. Formulator must understand how to operate machinery including blenders, granulators, coaters, mills, compactors, etc.
  • Performs raw material evaluations, documents all data collected during testing and evaluates same for completeness and correctness
  • Performs and/or assists in various phases of R&D and product development activities. Processes lab batches and scale up batches using scales, blenders, tablet presses, encapsulators, coaters, granulators, mills, rollers, compactors, etc.


You’ll need the following (minimum qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree of Science in Chemistry or Nutrition is desired plus 5 years of relevant experience in product development in the Nutraceutical or Pharmaceutical industry, or Masters degree plus 0-2 years’ relevant experience in product development in the Nutraceutical or Pharmaceutical industry. (other CPG experience will be considered depending on relative applications).
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in product/process development, processing laboratory techniques, regulatory requirements, and a firm foundation in basic sciences.
  • Demonstrated success in formulating, scaling up and commercializing complex solid dose formulations, including hands-on lab experience. Ability to adapt to change and to find creative solutions to keep projects on track.
  • Possess knowledge of technical standards and techniques
  • Must be familiar with the equipment and techniques used in formulation of tablets, capsules and powders
  • Requires understanding of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs)
  • Must possess ability to evaluate physical and mechanical properties of raw materials to be used in the formulations and the ability to objectively evaluate the resulting physical properties of the finished product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate within a cross-functional team environment especially with manufacturing, operations, quality, and maintenance.
  • Understanding of product lifecycle management and associated software tools.
  • Willing to travel between 10% - 25% as necessary.


A reasonable estimate of the current salary range for this position is $90,000 to $140,000. Actual compensation offered may vary depending on skill level, experience, and/or education.
