Job description

The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) is the country’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Founded in 1940 under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall, who subsequently became the first Black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, LDF was launched at a time when the nation’s aspirations for equality and due process of law were stifled by widespread state-sponsored racial inequality. From that era to the present, LDF’s mission has been transformative—to achieve racial justice, equality, and an inclusive society.

LDF’s litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education programs in the substantive areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education, and political participation seek to ensure the fundamental and basic human rights of all people to quality education, economic opportunity, the right to vote and fully participate in democracy, and the right to a fair and just judicial system. LDF continues to make an impact in the area of public service and was recognized by Fast Company as one of its 2023 Brands That Matter under its public service category.

Development Department

LDF’s Development Department oversees all fundraising efforts to support LDF’s ongoing programs and operations. This is a transformative time for LDF, and the Development Department has grown as a result of the widespread attention. The Development Department looks to build on this recent growth in the coming years.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) seeks a collaborative, motivated, and experienced individual to serve as the Direct Marketing Manager, reporting to the Direct Marketing Director, and overseeing a robust direct marketing fundraising program.

LDF operates in a hybrid work environment where employees are expected to be in the office a minimum of two days per week, unless otherwise indicated.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualizing the public facing direct marketing materials from start to finish, including digital fundraising, direct mail, SMS communications, online advertising, and workplace giving campaigns. This person will ensure these materials are free of errors and align with LDF messaging.
  • Participate in the development of projections and assist in monitoring the progress towards those projections.
  • Maintain awareness of industry trends to present thoughtful analysis to direct marketing director and senior leadership on the performance of campaigns to inform future strategy.
  • Work within our CRM’s (EveryAction and Raiser’s Edge), pulling data, building landing pages, and monitoring performance.
  • Oversee and contribute actively to the development of direct marketing calendars. Actively track the trajectory of our overall communications strategy to be sure our messaging is aligning with the organization.
  • Supervise management of financial and contractual aspects of projects and ensure accurate billing from vendors and consultants.
  • Assist within the development department as needed when direct marketing and other initiatives overlap.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required. Recent graduates and candidates with transferable experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but is not required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and passion for civil rights causes
  • Several years experience working within CRMs like EveryAction and Raiser’s Edge.
  • Several years experience managing a fundraising communications calendar
  • Experience drafting and producing mass marketing fundraising emails
  • Experience drafting and producing mass marketing direct mail pieces
  • In-depth knowledge of current digital trends
  • Attention to detail and an eye for copyediting
  • Experience working on digital ad fundraising programs
  • Ability to work and communicate within a team structure while also being able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and effectively communicate and solve practical problems or issues

The salary range for this position is:

New York: $77,600 - $107,500

Washington, D.C.: $74,400 - $103,000

While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job or to require that other or different tasks be performed as assigned.
