MAJOR FUNCTION:
Major responsibility is to assist the dentist in the operatory. Maintains instruments, work areas and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist. Reports to Dental Staff Manager.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES:
  • Greets patient in the waiting area: Escorts patient to dental treatment area, seat patient in professional manner and make professional conversation.
  • Reviews dental record: Check next procedure, most current X-rays, referrals (if appropriate), dental labs (if appropriate), and medical history.
  • Takes and records vital signs: Take blood pressure.
  • Takes dental radiographs: Check for clarity and determine readability.
  • Prepares dental operatory: Determine next procedure, set up appropriate equipment for procedure and explain to patient what will be done.
  • Pre-impression evaluation: Pre-select primary impression tray size, and take primary impression and pour the model.
  • Operatory disinfection: Properly clean and disinfect all rooms after treatment of patients, cleans and disinfects entire treatment area on a daily basis.
  • Instrumentation: Sonicate all instruments daily, bag and autoclave all instruments daily, set treatment trays daily.
  • Equipment maintenance: Maintain strict scheduled maintenance of all equipment.
  • Performs four-handed dentistry: Retracts patient's cheek and tongue during dental procedure, removes debris from patient's mouth, overall assistance with dental procedure, suture removal (if appropriate), and assist in training of students and new staff members.
  • Maintain logs: Bio log, autoclave/sterilization log, rotation of instruments log.
  • Close down rooms and restock: Run line in each treatment room daily, properly shut down /off equipment, and restock rooms.
  • Provides oral health education to patients.
  • Pouring and trimming models.
  • Maintains dental supply inventory.
  • Review schedules to ensure that lab cases are available.
  • Provides post-op instructions to patients after extraction

OTHER JOB DUTIES:
  • Provides safe environment of care
  • Reduces risk of nosocomial infections in patients, employees and visitors.
  • Interacts with patients, visitors, staff and outside agencies in professional manner
  • Contributes to Improving Organizational Performance Activities
  • Promotes positive working relationships among supervisor, staff, and other departments
  • Interacts with all other departments to achieve health center mission
  • Maintains strict confidentiality at all times as per Confidentiality Statement
  • Identifies problems and develops recommendation for resolution
  • Demonstrates ability to organize and prioritize tasks
  • Assumes personal responsibility for ongoing professional growth and development
  • Participates in department planning activities, as requested
  • Participates in health center committees, as assigned
  • Adheres to CCHN personnel policies
  • Maintains clear and orderly work area.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate from an approved educational program in dental assisting.
  • Licensed registration certificate in x-ray technology approved by the Department of Environmental Protection.
  • CPR Required
  • Bilingual (Spanish) desire.
  • Works with hazardous and bio-hazardous materials. Long hours of standing, walking.
