Job description

Job Summary Cleans and sanitizes animal exhibits, prepares diets for a wide variety of species, monitors feed inventories, maintains clean and orderly kitchen, feed storage areas, and animal hospital facilities. This position will also provide opportunities for learning husbandry techniques and gaining animal handling experience. This is an LTE position which means there are no benefits given with the role.

Hours available: 1-3 days per week, to include weekends. Essential Duties Prepares zoo diets for zoological specimens. Inspects and cleans food storage, food preparation area, and animal exhibits to insure safe and sanitary conditions for both public and collection specimens.

Maintains records and observations on collection and reports routinely to manager on status of individual animals. Performs general and preventative maintenance work on zoo grounds and facilities to include landscaping, cleaning, mowing, painting, and minor construction. Assists in training and direction of assigned volunteers.

Assists in enforcement of park ordinances and public safety. Performs related functions as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Required Education and Experience: General knowledge of and/or course work in Biology, Zoology or Animal Husbandry; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

Previous relevant experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications: Valid Wisconsin Driver's License Hunter Safety/Firearm Safety Certification (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire) Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Minimal working knowledge of building and grounds maintenance. Minimal working knowledge of animal husbandry.

Minimal knowledge of horticultural and landscaping methods. Knowledge of and ability to utilize a computer and the require software (ZIMS, ISIS programs). Ability to perform heavy manual labor.

Ability to operate trucks and power equipment. Ability to follow detailed instructions. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to answer inquiries and complaints effectively with tact and courtesy. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff and the public. Ability to work with all species in the zoo collection.

Ability to use a firearm and tranquilizer gun. Ability to work the required hours of the position. Brown County is an E-Verify employer.
