This position is based onsite in San Diego, CA.

Mainstay Medical is a medical device company focused on marketing an innovative implantable neurostimulation system, ReActiv8®, for people with disabling chronic mechanical Low Back Pain. The company is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, with subsidiaries operating in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

The Role:

The Head of Commercial Operations, based in our San Diego office, will provide executive-level vision and strategic leadership to maximize the Commercial performance of ReActiv8. Reporting to the CEO, who is also based in San Diego, this role serves as a key member of the senior leadership team and is accountable for architecting and scaling a market-facing Commercial organization that drives sustainable revenue growth and profitability.

This individual will lead and integrate sales operations technology, territory management, pricing strategy, contracts, and business intelligence functions, ensuring full alignment of Commercial execution that achieves corporate growth objectives and investor expectations.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Own end-to-end commercial operations strategy for U.S. and international markets, with primary accountability for U.S. market performance; set the vision for scalable infrastructure that supports aggressive commercial growth.
  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensive value strategy that integrates pricing, payer research, and health economics to optimize market positioning, pricing, contracting and reimbursement outcomes.
  • Lead the design of systems and tools (e.g., software) to enhance field communication, customer targeting, territory optimization, call patterns, etc.
  • Build, develop, and inspire high-performing teams across sales operations and business intelligence; establish a culture of accountability, analytical rigor, and commercial excellence.
  • Champion data and analytics as a strategic asset; drive adoption of business intelligence frameworks across the organization that generate actionable insights to accelerate growth and inform executive decision-making across global markets.
  • Define and execute national and regional market access contracting strategies; cultivate executive-level relationships with payers, IDNs, and key accounts to strengthen commercial positioning.
  • Establish and continuously improve operational policies, procedures, and governance frameworks that drive efficiency, compliance, and scalability across the commercial organization.
  • Represent commercial operations at the executive leadership level; serve as a vocal advocate for field and market-facing needs within the broader organization.
  • Uphold and model the values, policies, and compliance standards of the Mainstay Medical group.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in commercial operations or sales operations within the medical device or life sciences industry, with a minimum of 5 years in senior leadership roles with direct P&L responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, in a hands-on way, the decision process on software implementation, CRM deployment, territory mapping, and the choice (and deployment) of tools to drive efficiency.
  • Proven track record as an executive leader who has built and scaled commercial operations functions in a high-growth medical device or life science environment.
  • Deep expertise in U.S. market access, reimbursement strategy, pricing, and health economics; international commercial experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex data sets — including real-world evidence, modeling, and market analytics — into executive-level strategic recommendations that drive commercial outcomes.
  • Experience leading organizations through significant growth inflection points, including team builds, system implementations, commercial territory management, and market launches.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence C-suite stakeholders, board members, and external partners; skilled at building alignment across matrixed organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree (MBA, MPH, or equivalent) strongly preferred.

The salary range for this position is $260,000 to $320,000/year; however, base pay offered will take into account a range of factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package includes a range of medical, dental, vision, financial, and other benefits, as well as equity.
