Job Summary:
Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.)
    • Must be a graduate of an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school recognized by one of the following:
      • Council on Medical Education (AMA)
      • Association of American Medical Colleges
      • Liaison Committee on Medical Education
      • Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation
      • Or another accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and ACGME.
    • Foreign medical graduates must show equivalent education through:
      • Permanent ECFMG certification
      • Fifth Pathway Certificate (for Americans completing pre-med in the U.S.)
      • Or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
  • Certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • ACLS/ALS and PALS (recommended, not required)
  • License: Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine is highly
    recommended. If not, board certified in Aerospace Medicine, then must show proof of
    completion of medical residency program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine,
    Emergency Medicine, Occupational Medicine, or Preventive Medicine from an approved
    school of medicine or osteopathy and must have a minimum of three years of U.S.
    military Flight Surgeon experience.
  • Experience:
    • At least 160 hours of direct patient care in the past year
    • 3+ years as a privileged flight surgeon at a U.S. Military installation within the last 10 years
    • Familiarity with:
      • U.S. military medical standards for operational evaluations (e.g., Preventive Health Assessment, initial certification exams)
      • Aeromedical disposition for flying/special duty
      • Adaptability rating assessments for special duty applicants
      • Applying medical and fitness standards per DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 36-2905, and AFI 48-133
      • Providing primary care for active-duty personnel and families

U.S. Citizenship is required and NACI clearance is required.
Key Responsibilities:???????
Clinical Care
  • Examine patients, develop diagnostic plans, order and interpret tests.
  • Implement treatment plans and determine need for specialist consultations.
  • Approve or deny subspecialty referrals and perform case management.
  • Provide primary and preventive care for active-duty personnel and families.
  • Respond to patient phone consults with clinic staff assistance.

Medical Procedures
  • Maintain certification and perform procedures such as:
    • Basic Life Support, airway management (including intubation), cardioversion.
    • Minor surgical procedures (biopsies, lesion excision, abscess drainage).
    • Wound care, splinting, fracture/dislocation reduction, catheterization.
    • Administer IV/IM medications, nebulizer treatments, cryotherapy.
    • Foreign body removal (ocular, nasal, ear), ear irrigation.
    • Venipuncture and lab interpretation.

Specialized Responsibilities
  • Conduct operational evaluations (PHA, initial certification exams for flyers/special duty).
  • Perform adaptability assessments and PRP/PSP determinations.
  • Make aeromedical dispositions (waivers, DNIF/DNIC, DD Form 2992) per credentials.
  • Apply medical and fitness standards per DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 36-2905, AFI 44-133.
  • Complete deployment health assessments and support occupational health programs.

Administrative & Leadership
  • Prepare records and reports per AFIs, DHA guidelines, and MTF instructions.
  • Participate in meetings, safety reviews, and quality improvement activities.
  • Serve as liaison between flying squadrons and medical services.
  • Provide clinical advice and oversight for PHA and occupational medicine programs.
  • Support committees and working groups as a medical advisor.
  • Participate in mass casualty and disease containment exercises.
