Job description

Laboratory Education Specialist

Schedule: Monday - Friday (40 hrs/wk) 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Training Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Department: Education - Ref Bus Unit - 800; This position will support the Infectious Disease division

Primary Purpose: This position is responsible to create and maintain in-house training programs for corporate and department specific learning needs including the introduction of new employees to ARUP; alterations in learning plans following performance reviews; and regulatory changes that create the need for a modification in learning content. This position coordinates the laboratory rotation needs of all students in academic programs, residencies and fellowships for their technical division.

The role of the Laboratory Education Specialist is to effectively promote and support professional development at all times. This position works in collaboration with division and department managers, supervisors, department training staff, LEaP Performance and Training Administrators, the HSIS Team, Medical Directors, and various education programs throughout the organization, and associated colleges and universities.

Essential Functions:

  • Gains and maintains knowledge of current training, competency, and continuing education requirements of federal, state, local governments, and other accrediting and licensure bodies, which includes but is not limited to CLIA, CAP, ISO, New York, California, AAB, FDA and the ASCP.
  • Meets with employees at all stages of their career at ARUP to ensure compliance with corporate and job specific requirements.
  • Develops, implements and manages education strategies, interventions and programs for assigned divisions/departments.
  • Serves as a liaison between technical and non-technical departments.
  • Troubleshoots any problems associated with the Cornerstone LEaP software system, both for individual staff members and when there are global software updates.
  • Maintains professional relationships with stakeholders, team members, and external education directors and staff members of universities and colleges.
  • Develops, monitors and assesses teaching and competency programs for assigned division/departments.
  • Develops and reviews processes to ensure assigned divisions/departments are in compliance with new and existing corporate training, competency, and continuing education requirements. Such processes may include development/review of written policies and procedures, internal and external audits, document control.
  • Compiles annual budget estimates for the University of Utah reflecting teaching time spent and supplies used for student rotations.
  • Works closely and effectively with internal teams from the IFL, Human Resources, Quality and Compliance, Document Control, PharmaDx, Research and Development, IT, Facilities, Bioengineering, and others.
  • Manages supplies, equipment and scheduling for the Pipette Training Room in addition to teaching corporate pipetting classes.
  • Presents practical information to division/department personnel through various methods such as lectures, handouts and case studies and assesses practical abilities by developing and administering exams.
  • Teaches and trains individuals throughout ARUP, including but not limited to university students involved in laboratory rotations and new hires.
  • Ensures students adhere to rotation program expectations and rules.
  • Prepares educational materials that are clear, concise and meet company/department objectives.
  • Assesses employee educational needs, including change readiness.
  • Monitors and ensures that trainers and teaching specialists are effectively teaching the workforce.
  • Coordinates education schedules and staff involvement with Supervisors and Program Coordinators for fellows and residents, university students, visiting scholars, and other outside educational program participants. Evaluates and discusses problems and recommendations for improvement.
  • Creates and coordinates Educational Plans as necessary.
  • Audits the progress of employees through their career at ARUP Laboratories.
  • Meets regularly with key stakeholders to ensure the continuing educational and competency development needs are being met.
  • Focuses on learner outcomes, sound professional development systems a) improve instructor effectiveness, b) provide continuous staff learning, and c) foster programmatic revisions.
  • Teaches and/or assists with managing courses taught at a college or university including developing and updating materials, grading exams, running review sessions and troubleshooting Canvas.
  • Leads and participates in companywide projects to standardize education and training efforts. This includes corporate SOP writing/collaboration and corporate-level training modules.
  • Creates and promotes CE events.
  • Works alongside a Laboratory Education Specialist II or III, who serves as a mentor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical and Other Requirements:

  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.
  • PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
  • Authorized to Work: Must be a citizen of the United States or authorized to work in the United States.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Qualifications

Education:

Required Bachelor's Degree or better in Other: See Notes or related field.

Preferred Bachelor's Degree or better in Clinical Laboratory Sciences or related field. Master's Degree or better in Education or related field.

Experience:

Required Bachelor's degree in applicable field from an accredited institution Two years of directly applicable experience in areas such as training and/or education Demonstrated organizational, problem solving, troubleshooting, and interpersonal skills Demonstrated working knowledge of regulatory requirements Demonstrated technical acumen

Preferred Bachelor's degree in Clinical or Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, related life science, Education, or related field MLS(ASCP) / MT(ASCP) or Specialty Certification or Teaching Certificate Master's degree in Education/Science Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, database and e-mail applications) Experience using the Cornerstone LEaP (Learning, Education and Performance) software system
