What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Maintenance Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maintenance Reliability Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, reliability analysis, and failure modes, usually supported by a degree in mechanical, electrical, or industrial engineering. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), predictive maintenance tools, and certifications like Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) are often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a proactive mindset are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure equipment uptime, optimize maintenance strategies, and drive operational efficiency within industrial environments.

How does a Maintenance Reliability Engineer typically collaborate with production and operations teams to improve equipment performance?

Maintenance Reliability Engineers frequently work alongside production and operations teams to identify recurring equipment issues, analyze root causes, and implement solutions that enhance overall asset reliability. This collaboration often involves regular meetings, reviewing equipment data together, and jointly prioritizing maintenance tasks to minimize disruptions to production schedules. By building strong communication channels, engineers ensure that maintenance strategies align with operational goals, leading to more efficient processes and reduced downtime.

What is a Maintenance Reliability Engineer?

A Maintenance Reliability Engineer is a professional who focuses on improving the reliability and efficiency of equipment and machinery in industrial settings. They analyze equipment performance data, identify root causes of failures, and develop maintenance strategies to prevent unplanned downtime. Their goal is to optimize maintenance processes, reduce costs, and ensure the safe, continuous operation of production facilities. Maintenance Reliability Engineers often work closely with maintenance teams, operations staff, and other engineering disciplines to implement reliability best practices and predictive maintenance programs.

What is the difference between Maintenance Reliability Engineer vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectMaintenance Reliability EngineerMaintenance Technician
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field; certifications like CMRT or CRL often preferredHigh school diploma or technical training; certifications like EPA or OSHA may be required
Work EnvironmentDesigning reliability strategies, analyzing data, improving systems in industrial settingsPerforming routine maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting on equipment
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, energy, and process industries focusing on system reliabilityCommonly employed in factories, plants, and facilities for equipment upkeep

The Maintenance Reliability Engineer focuses on analyzing data and developing strategies to improve equipment reliability, while the Maintenance Technician handles hands-on repairs and maintenance tasks. Both roles are essential in industrial settings but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Waunakee, WI | On-site | Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing
Eliminate failures. Strengthen assets. Drive reliability that protects life-saving production.
Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL) is a global leader in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, producing critical therapies that improve and save lives worldwide. Reliable equipment is essential to delivering safe, high-quality biologicsโ€ฆand thatโ€™s where you come in.
Weโ€™re seeking a Reliability Engineer to lead reliability strategy and execution at our Waunakee, WI site. This role goes beyond reactive maintenance. Youโ€™ll drive failure elimination, optimize preventive maintenance programs, strengthen predictive maintenance capabilities, and influence capital investments that improve asset performance.
If you thrive on data-driven problem solving, enjoy leading technical initiatives, and want to make measurable impact in a regulated manufacturing environment, this is a high-visibility opportunity to do just that.

What Youโ€™ll Do
As the Reliability Engineer, youโ€™ll lead efforts to reduce unplanned downtime, eliminate repeat failures, and ensure maintenance resources are focused where they add the most value.
Reliability Strategy & Failure Elimination
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for significant or repeat failures; drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure
  • Conduct FMEA on critical assets to identify failure modes and optimize maintenance strategies
  • Identify and eliminate โ€œBad Actorsโ€ (chronic problem equipment) through structured improvement plans
  • Analyze CMMS data to identify downtime drivers, reliability trends, and improvement priorities
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance Optimization
  • Own PM program technical strategy, including categorization, task optimization, and interval management
  • Perform risk-based PM assessments (severity, occurrence, detection) and coordinate Quality-critical PM reviews with QA
  • Develop and refine predictive maintenance (PdM) programs including vibration, thermography, oil analysis, and ultrasound
  • Partner with Maintenance Planning to ensure PM content is technically sound and value-added
Asset Lifecycle & Capital Project Support
  • Provide reliability input to capital projects, including design reviews, commissioning plans, and acceptance criteria
  • Identify, propose, and lead capital projects that improve equipment reliability or eliminate chronic failure modes
  • Support Asset Lifecycle Management (LCAM) processes for new or modified equipment installations
  • Lead change control efforts for reliability improvements on GMP equipment
Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Provide technical leadership to Engineering Technicians and experienced maintenance personnel
  • Guide complex troubleshooting efforts and promote reliability best practices
  • Partner with Production, Maintenance, Quality, and Engineering to drive sustainable reliability improvements
  • Report reliability performance insights and recommendations to Maintenance, Facilities & Asset Systems leadership

What You Bring
Required
  • Associateโ€™s degree or higher in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Industrial, Reliability) or related discipline โ€” or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 2+ years of reliability, maintenance engineering, or related experience
  • Experience performing or leading RCA, FMEA, or structured problem-solving methodologies
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret CMMS data
  • Working knowledge of maintenance strategies within a regulated manufacturing environment
Preferred
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree or higher in Engineering
  • 10+ years of reliability or maintenance engineering experience

  • Competitive compensation package including base salary and recognition programs
  • 401(k) with company match to support your long-term financial goals
  • Generous paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
  • Career development and leadership growth opportunities within a global biopharmaceutical organization
  • Collaborative, science-driven culture that values integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • High quality of life in Waunakee, WI! A growing community just outside Madison with excellent schools and outdoor recreation
