Maintenance Manager information

What does a maintenance manager do?

A Maintenance Manager oversees the upkeep and repair of facilities, equipment, and machinery within an organization. They are responsible for developing maintenance schedules, managing a team of technicians, ensuring safety standards are met, and coordinating with other departments for efficient operations. The role also involves budgeting, sourcing parts and supplies, and implementing preventive maintenance strategies to minimize downtime. Maintenance Managers play a key role in ensuring that all systems operate smoothly and efficiently, helping to prevent costly breakdowns and prolonging the lifespan of assets.

What are some typical challenges a maintenance manager might face when leading a diverse team?

Maintenance Managers often supervise teams with varying skill levels and specialties, such as electricians, mechanics, and HVAC technicians. One common challenge is ensuring effective communication across these specialties to coordinate repairs and preventive maintenance efficiently. Balancing urgent breakdowns with scheduled tasks and managing resource allocation can also be demanding. Successful Maintenance Managers foster a collaborative environment, encourage ongoing training, and implement clear processes to keep the team aligned and motivated.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a maintenance manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Maintenance Manager, you need strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, experience in facility management, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), safety regulations, and relevant certifications like OSHA or CMRP is highly valuable. Leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and coordinating with other departments. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure safe, efficient operations and to minimize downtime in any facility.

In contrast, the Maintenance Supervisor handles daily maintenance tasks, supervises technicians, and ensures safety and quality. Both roles are essential in maintaining operational efficiency, but they differ mainly in scope and responsibilities.

This high-impact role is crucial for driving world-class operational excellence and maximizing asset value within the cement production facility. The core objective is to fundamentally transform the maintenance culture from reactive and corrective to a proactive, preventative, and best-in-class framework. This involves coordinating the maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and mobile equipment to boost asset reliability and ensure cost-efficient operation. As a key member of the plant leadership team, the incumbent is also responsible for establishing and enforcing maintenance department policies and procedures and cultivating strong, collaborative relationships between maintenance personnel and other departments.

WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH

  • Implement a standard maintenance process framework to shift the plant toward a proactive and preventative mindset.
  • Achieve targeted KPIs, including safety performance, OEE, reliability, production volumes, and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).
  • Manage annual operational budgets ($20M - $30M CAD), including detailed monthly forecasting and cost control.
  • Coordinate multi-level maintenance planning, ranging from weekly activities to long-term 5-year Plant Development Plans.
  • Drive Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes to address plant emergencies and breakdowns, promoting permanent solutions.
  • Develop and manage plant sustaining capital projects (CAPEX), including engineering support, procurement, and cost control.
  • Optimize spare parts inventories and third-party service contracts in collaboration with the Procurement department.
  • Ensure compliance with group-wide Cement Industrial Framework (CIF) elements and industry standards such as ASTM and CSA.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to health, safety and environmental policies in all work environments and areas. Promote a culture of safety and exhibit these behaviours.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Education: BSc. degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or similar).
  • Additional Education Preferred: Technologist diploma or trades certificate with significant (7-10 years) industry experience.
  • Work Experience: 7-10 years in an industrial environment with a proven track record of shifting from corrective to preventive maintenance.

Additional Requirements:

  • Strong leadership, team-building, and communication skills.
  • Excellent planning, time management, and project management capabilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and multitask in a high-demand environment.
  • Cement operating experience would be an asset.
  • Successful candidates must adhere to all safety protocols and proper use of Amrize approved Personal Protection Equipment ("PPE"), including but not limited to respirators. Employees that are required to wear respirators must be clean shaven where the respirator seal meets the face in order to pass the qualitative and quantitative fit tests.
