How much do mainframe rexx jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for mainframe rexx in the United States is $53.38, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47.12 and $60.58 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Will the mainframe be replaced by AI?

Mainframe Rexx programmers work with legacy systems that continue to be vital for many large organizations. While AI and automation tools are increasingly used to enhance mainframe operations, they are unlikely to fully replace mainframe roles in the near future. Skills in mainframe environments, including scripting languages like Rexx, remain valuable for maintaining and optimizing these systems.

How to run rexx code in mainframe?

Mainframe Rexx code is typically executed using the TSO (Time Sharing Option) environment or through a dedicated Rexx interpreter like IBM's Rexx. To run Rexx scripts, you can submit the code as a member of a dataset or use the EXEC command within TSO, ensuring the script has the proper extension and execute permissions. Familiarity with JCL (Job Control Language) may also be required for batch processing of Rexx programs.

What is a Mainframe Rexx job?

A Mainframe Rexx job involves developing, maintaining, and optimizing REXX scripts on IBM mainframe systems. REXX (Restructured Extended Executor) is a scripting language used for automation, data processing, and system administration tasks. Professionals in this role often work with tools like TSO, ISPF, JCL, and DB2 to streamline workflows and improve efficiency. They may also be responsible for debugging, performance tuning, and integrating REXX with other mainframe applications.

Are mainframe jobs in demand?

Mainframe Rexx programmers are in demand due to the continued reliance on legacy mainframe systems in industries like finance and government. Skills in mainframe environments, including knowledge of COBOL, JCL, and mainframe security, can enhance job prospects as many organizations maintain these systems for critical operations.

What is rexx in mainframe?

Rexx (Restructured Extended Executor) is a scripting language commonly used in mainframe environments for automation, data processing, and system management tasks. Mainframe Rexx allows developers and operators to write scripts that interact with system resources, automate workflows, and improve efficiency, often integrated with z/OS systems and tools.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a Mainframe Rexx role?

Mainframe Rexx professionals often encounter challenges such as maintaining legacy systems, adapting to evolving business requirements, and troubleshooting complex code in established mainframe environments. Working effectively means balancing the need to update or streamline automated tasks through REXX scripting while ensuring compatibility with existing applications and processes. Additionally, collaboration with cross-functional teams—including operations, development, and support—is frequent, requiring clear communication and documentation skills. Adapting quickly to upgrades or integration with newer technologies can also be a part of the role. Overcoming these challenges is a key opportunity for skill development and demonstrating your value within large organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Mainframe Rexx position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Mainframe Rexx professional, you need expertise in REXX programming, JCL, and mainframe environments like z/OS, often supported by a degree in computer science or similar technical field. Experience with IBM mainframe tools, scripting, and optional certifications such as IBM Certified System Programmer are highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for excelling in this position. These capabilities are crucial for efficiently maintaining, automating, and troubleshooting mainframe processes critical to enterprise operations.
