Job description
Under the direction of the Lead Technical Laboratory Specialist or the Technical Laboratory Manager, the Technical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for conducting experiments, performing tests, and providing results, analysis and reporting. The Technical Laboratory Specialist is also responsible for maintaining the laboratory, equipment, and inventory as well as safely handling, storing, and disposing of samples, chemicals, and other materials. This position is considered to be a safety-sensitive position.
The Technical Laboratory Specialist role encompasses three levels of seniority based on skillset and experience with Magnum's various service lines. Specific definitions on the levels are as follows:
Technical Laboratory Specialist 1
The Technical Laboratory Specialist 1 position is an entry-level position into the role. Technical Laboratory Specialist 1's are able to competently and successfully complete the job requirements as specified below. This role is required to participate in an on-call rotation, work a rotational schedule, and support the satellite laboratories.
Technical Laboratory Specialist 2
The Technical Laboratory Specialist 2 position is an intermediate position awarded to Technical Laboratory Specialists who have a proven track record of level 1 tasks, as well as independently completing Soil Stabilization service line testing and reporting, in addition to completing all tests in the Laboratory SPOs and interpreting the results. This role will act as a mentor to Technical Laboratory Specialist 1's. This role is required to participate in an on-call rotation, work a rotational schedule, and support the satellite laboratories.
Technical Laboratory Specialist 3
The Technical Laboratory Specialist 3 position is a senior, specialized position awarded to Technical Laboratory Specialists who have a proven track record of competently and successfully performing all level 1 and level 2 tasks for the Oilfield Cementing, Fluid Services, and Soil Stabilization service lines. This role will act as a mentor to Technical Laboratory Specialist 1 and 2's. This role is required to participate in an on-call rotation.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Entry-Level Laboratory Tasks
- Learn, understand, and apply the basics of cement blends and additives, including calculations.
- Log all field samples and experimental products.
- Complete reports and enter test data, as required.
- Operate and maintain all laboratory equipment and inventory.
- Conduct the safe handling, storage, and disposal of samples, chemicals, and other materials.
- Assist with soil stabilization testing for Magnum's Infrastructure service line.
- Conduct quality control testing for the lab and field cement samples, including weighing the cement, additives, and water.
- Coordinate internal testing of samples (cement blend formulations) upon request.
- Conduct and complete all lab tests as per departmental SOP's. Complete and summarize reports and interpret test data.
- Independently conduct soil stabilization testing for Magnum's Infrastructure service line, maintaining reporting and issuing recommendations, as applicable.
- Obtain and apply a greater understanding of all laboratory maintenance, cement blend calculations, and products, interactions, blends, and operations.
- Maintain, operate, calibrate, and install all equipment in the lab.
- Troubleshoot products and blends, as required.
- Maintain the testing database, ensuring accuracy.
- Assist with maintaining all departmental marketing materials (product pages, blend pages, handbooks).
- Assist with departmental research and development projects. Maintain and update project summaries.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry-level laboratory tasks.
- Manage and prioritize lab testing for the department, delegating to the team as required.
- Schedule equipment maintenance and track all parts and the associated cost.
- Ensure that all departmental data (test data, SDS database, laboratory testing SOP's, product information and specifications, lab calculators, etc.) is captured, maintained, and updated regularly.
- Maintain all departmental marketing materials (product pages, blend pages, handbooks) and participate in presentations with the Sales department.
- Review lab reports for accuracy and completeness.

- Carry out quality control checks for the department, as needed.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry-level and intermediate laboratory tasks.
- Follow all of Magnum's JSA and Safe Work Procedures.
- Complete and participate in all required safety training, both internal and external.
- Understand and apply Magnum's QHSE policies and expectations.
- Work with management to improve standard operating procedures and policies.
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Other related duties as required.
Required
- Progressively responsible experience in a relevant Technical Laboratory Specialist role, as applicable to the level of role being assigned to.
- Able to work overtime, accommodate a flexible schedule, and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Able to travel to satellite laboratories and act as support to meet the needs of the business.
- Legally eligible to work in the country the role is based out of.
- Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Environmental, or Engineering.
- Ability to apply judgment in handling hazardous chemicals, as well as the knowledge of chemical properties and composites.
- Proven ability to translate chemistry complexities into basic terminology.
- Ability to self-manage and work independently during working hours.
