Public Relations and Media Intern

Accountability

Reports to the Coordinator of the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) within the Office for Culture and Student Development (OCSD) and works collaboratively with Multicultural Resource Center staff, student employees, and campus partners to support leadership development programming, media initiatives, and operational support within the center.

Scope of Responsibility

The Multicultural Resource Center Public Relations and Media Intern support the development, promotion, and coordination of programs and initiatives within the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) and the Office for Culture and Student Development (OCSD), which operates under the Dean of Students within Student Affairs. This role assists with event planning, podcast production, student storytelling initiatives, and the creation of media content for Multicultural Resource Center projects, including the MRC magazine and other communication materials.

Through this position, the intern will gain hands-on experience in leadership development programming, digital media production, event coordination, and multicultural center operations. The role supports initiatives that promote student belonging, engagement, and leadership development at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Specific Duties

Leadership & Program Support

Assist with planning, coordinating, and implementing Multicultural Resource Center leadership programs, workshops, and on and off campus events
Support collaborative initiatives with student organizations connected to the Multicultural Resource Center and the Office for Culture and Student Development
Assist with outreach and engagement activities that promote student belonging and cultural awareness

Support planning logistics for programs including room reservations, materials preparation, marketing, budgeting, and event promotion
Assist in documenting program outcomes and participation data

Media & Communications

Assist with editing and production of the Multicultural Resource Center podcast
Support development of the Multicultural Resource Magazine, including editing student stories, assisting with layout concepts, and preparing publication content
Assist in creating promotional materials for Multicultural Resource Center programs and initiatives
Support storytelling initiatives that highlight student leadership and cultural experiences
Help maintain digital media archives including photos, recordings, and promotional materials or platforms

Operational Support

Assist with daily operations of the Multicultural Resource Center
Help maintain organization of program supplies, event materials, and promotional items
Assist with preparation of outreach materials such as flyers, brochures, and tabling resources
Support the Multicultural Resource Center tabling events and campus outreach initiatives
Assist in maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment for students visiting the center

Administrative Duties

Participate in onboarding and training provided by the Multicultural Resource Center and the Office for Culture and Student Development to gain familiarity with departmental policies, procedures, and university expectations.
Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings, program planning meetings, and training sessions as requested to stay informed about the Multicultural Resource Center initiatives, campus partnerships, and program development.
Maintain a consistent and reliable work schedule each semester and communicate proactively with the supervisor regarding scheduling needs or adjustments.
Accurately submit timecards, required personnel documentation, and internship materials in accordance with university and Pathways Internship Program deadlines.
Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and respectful communication within the Multicultural Resource Center workspace while supporting a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students and visitors.
Assist with departmental initiatives, events, outreach activities, and collaborative programming across campus partners within the Office for Culture and Student Development and Student Affairs.
Participate in professional development opportunities, trainings, and reflections that support leadership growth, career readiness, and understanding of multicultural and student success initiatives.

Skills / Requirements

Demonstrated interest in leadership development, student engagement, student success initiatives, public relations, communications, or media production within a higher education setting.

Experience or strong interest in event planning, podcast production, storytelling initiatives, publication editing, or multimedia communications is preferred.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey information, assist with outreach efforts, and contribute to promotional and educational materials.

Ability to stay organized, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet established deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with staff, student employees, and campus partners to support programs and initiatives.

Demonstrates professionalism, reliability, and accountability while working in a student-centered environment that promotes belonging, respect, and community engagement.

Interest in supporting programs and initiatives that promote student leadership, cultural awareness, and campus engagement.

Basic familiarity with media, design, or editing tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative applications, podcast editing software, or similar digital media platforms is helpful but not required; training may be provided.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities, assist with events or outreach activities, and support the day-to-day operations of the Multicultural Resource Center.

Qualifications and Compensation

Qualifications

To qualify for this internship, applicants must:

Be an enrolled undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Maintain good academic standing with the university.
Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Be able to work approximately 10 hours per week during the academic semester.

Scheduled work hours typically occur between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional evening hours that may be required to support special programs, events, or outreach activities.

This position may also qualify for internship credit or experiential learning credit, depending on the student's academic program and departmental approval

Compensation

$10 per hour
This internship is partially funded through the UW-Stevens Point Pathways Internship Program.

Student Learning / Internship Outcomes

Within this position, the intern will:

Develop leadership, collaboration, and professional communication skills through engagement with student organizations, campus partners, and community collaborators.

Gain practical experience in event planning, program coordination, and student-centered operations within a university resource center.

Build skills in media production, podcast editing, storytelling, and publication development, including contributing to Multicultural Resource Center communication projects.

Strengthen organizational, planning, and time-management skills by assisting with project coordination, program logistics, and meeting established deadlines.

Enhance understanding of student engagement initiatives and leadership development programming within a higher education environment.

Establish two professional development goals in collaboration with the internship supervisor that support career exploration, skill development, and future professional aspirations.
