Job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Material Handler supports Goodwill’s Donated Goods & Retail (DGR) optimization strategy by ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely movement of donated goods throughout the retail store operation. This store-based role focuses on material flow, staging, and transport to support speed-to-floor, reduce unnecessary handling, and reinforce 1-Touch principles.

Working closely with the Donation Attendant, Sorter, Retail Producer, and others, the Material Handler helps maintain an organized, safe, and productive environment that supports downstream processing and retail execution.

The following duties are considered essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.

Material Flow & DGR Support

  • Move donated goods efficiently between donation intake, sorting, processing, staging, and sales floor areas.
  • Support speed-to-floor by staging merchandise in designated locations according to DGR flow standards.
  • Apply1-Touchprinciples by minimizing unnecessary rehandling or backtracking of materials.
  • Assist with repositioning merchandise during peak donation or sales periods.

Loading, Unloading & Transport

  • Load and unload donation carts, buggies, racks, pallets, and trucks as assigned.
  • Stage materials for transfer to processing plants, recycling, salvage, or storage areas.
  • Secure loads properly to prevent damage, spills, or injury.

Equipment Operation & Safety

  • Safely operate approved material handling equipment, including pallet jacks, carts, buggies, rolling racks, and truck lift gates.
  • Follow all safety procedures related to lifting, material handling, and equipment use.
  • Identify and report equipment malfunctions, hazards, or unsafe conditions promptly.

Organization & Housekeeping

  • Maintain clear aisles, organized staging areas, and clean workspaces.
  • Assist with general housekeeping tasks to support a safe and efficient operation.
  • Support compliance with OSHA and Goodwill safety standards.

Teamwork & Operational Support

  • Work collaboratively with Donation Attendants, Sorters, Retail Producers, and Supervisors/Managers.
  • Assist other team members during high-volume periods as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support store operations.
