CNC VTL / Horizontal Machinist - 2nd Shift
Location: Redford, MI
Industry: Aerospace Manufacturing / Heavy Industrial Manufacturing
Job Category: CNC Machining / Precision Manufacturing
Compensation Range: $29.00–$35.00 per hour
Job Type: Full-Time
Shift:
2nd Shift (3pm - 11:30pm but flexible)
About the Opportunity
A growing aerospace manufacturer is seeking an experienced CNC VTL / Horizontal Machinist to join its Heavy Machining team on 2nd Shift. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled machinist who enjoys machining large, complex components while working with advanced CNC Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs) and Horizontal Machining Centers.
This is not a button-pushing operator role. We're looking for an experienced machinist who can independently perform machine setups, interpret complex blueprints, work with tight tolerances, make tooling and offset adjustments, and produce high-quality precision components used in demanding aerospace applications.
Candidates with extensive experience on either CNC Vertical Turning Lathes or Horizontal Machining Centers who have demonstrated the ability to learn new equipment are encouraged to apply.
What You'll Do
- Set up and operate CNC Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs) and/or CNC Horizontal Machining Centers
- Machine large metallic forgings, castings, and billets weighing over 500 pounds
- Review shop orders, aerospace blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions
- Interpret GD&T callouts while maintaining extremely tight tolerances
- Perform complete machine setups including tooling changes, offsets, and workholding
- Load, align, and secure large workpieces using overhead cranes, hoists, rigging equipment, and heavy-duty fixtures
- Monitor machining operations and make adjustments to maintain quality and productivity
- Replace cutting tools and inserts as needed to optimize machining performance
- Troubleshoot machining issues and make process improvements when appropriate
- Follow AS9100 quality standards and manufacturing documentation requirements
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Perform additional machining responsibilities as assigned
What You Bring
- 3-5+ years of CNC machining experience in aerospace, defense, heavy industrial, or precision manufacturing
- Experience with CNC Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs), Horizontal Machining Centers (HMCs), Horizontal Boring Mills, or other large CNC machining equipment
- Ability to perform complete machine setups with minimal supervision
- Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills
- Experience machining medium-to-large precision components
- Knowledge of tooling selection, offsets, inserts, feeds, and speeds
- Experience using overhead cranes, hoists, or rigging equipment to safely move large workpieces
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment
- High school diploma or equivalent
What's Offered
- Competitive hourly pay: $29.00-$35.00 per hour
- Full-time, long-term opportunity
- Stable aerospace manufacturing environment
- Opportunity to machine large, complex precision components
- Career growth with an established manufacturing organization
- Overtime opportunities based on production needs
