What is machine vision?

Machine vision is a field of technology and engineering that enables computers and machines to interpret and process visual information from the world, typically using cameras and image processing software. It is widely used in industrial automation for tasks such as inspection, measurement, and object recognition. Machine vision systems can analyze images to detect defects, guide robots, and ensure quality control. They play a crucial role in manufacturing, logistics, and many other sectors where visual inspection or guidance is required.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine vision engineer?

To thrive as a Machine Vision Engineer, you need strong knowledge of image processing, computer vision algorithms, and programming languages like Python or C++, typically supported by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with machine vision software (such as OpenCV, HALCON, or MATLAB), industrial cameras, and hardware integration is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing robust vision systems that ensure accuracy and efficiency in automated inspection and quality control processes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in machine vision roles?

Professionals in Machine Vision often encounter challenges related to integrating vision systems with existing automation equipment and ensuring reliable performance in variable lighting or environmental conditions. Troubleshooting hardware-software interactions and maintaining accurate image recognition in high-speed production environments are also frequent hurdles. Collaborating closely with cross-disciplinary teams, such as robotics engineers and production managers, is essential to address these challenges effectively and deliver robust solutions.

What is the difference between Machine Vision vs Computer Vision?

AspectMachine VisionComputer Vision
Required CredentialsTypically requires engineering degrees, certifications in image processing or automationOften requires computer science or AI-related degrees, certifications in deep learning or AI
Work EnvironmentIndustrial settings, manufacturing plants, quality control labsResearch labs, software development environments, AI startups
Industry UsageManufacturing, automation, roboticsHealthcare, autonomous vehicles, multimedia analysis
Search & Comparison IntentFocuses on industrial applications and hardware integrationFocuses on algorithms, software, and AI models

Machine Vision and Computer Vision are related fields but differ mainly in application and environment. Machine Vision is primarily used in industrial settings for automation and quality control, requiring specialized hardware and engineering skills. Computer Vision is broader, often involving AI and software development for applications like autonomous vehicles and image analysis. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job focus within the tech industry.

Job description

Catalyx is seeking a Machine Vision Engineer to join our team in Belgium.

Catalyx is a leader in industrial automation solutions, delivering innovative and efficient systems tailored to our clients' needs. We are seeking a highly skilled Machine Vision Engineer to join our team, where you will play a pivotal role in the design, development, and implementation of advanced machine vision systems.

As a Machine Vision Systems Engineer, you will be at the front end of the design, development, and deployment of custom machine vision systems within industrial automation projects. You will be responsible for ensuring these systems meet all technical specifications, adhere to industry standards, and satisfy customer requirements. This role requires close collaboration with engineering teams, vendors, and customers to deliver highโ€‘quality, productionโ€‘ready solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Work with customers and sales leadership to define the scope of machine vision projects.
  • Design the optical configurations for meeting inspection requirements within the constraints of the target environment.
  • Perform sample testing and POCs to verify designs.
  • Take ownership of the design and development of machine vision systems for custom industrial automation projects.
  • Conceptualize, design, and confirm technical specifications and bills of material for machine vision systems.
  • Provide oversight for equipment assessment, ordering, and verification, ensuring that final hardware and software meet customer needs.
  • Ensure that designs align with Catalyx and industry standards and meet all specified requirements.
  • Oversee and support the development, testing, and installation phases, ensuring systems are productionโ€‘ready and meet design specifications.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for machine vision system design, providing guidance in risk evaluation and technical matters.
  • Act as the escalation point for machine visionโ€‘related issues during the build, installation, and warranty phases.
  • Be part of our SLA support team, working in a rotating weekly schedule to assist our customers.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams on procurement, training, and upskilling, and assist in sales technical meetings as needed.
  • Meet with vendors to confirm component selection and stay informed on new technologies in machine vision and control systems.
  • Analyze existing procedures, suggest improvements, and support the creation of design and technical documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial or Computer Engineering from an accredited institution (vision component preferred)
  • Availability to work evening and weekend hours or varying work patterns depending on project needs.
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally.
Required Skills
  • Experience with frontโ€‘end GUI development using Cognex Designer and data management, preferably in SQL.
  • Experience in designing and developing machine vision systems within industrial automation and robot guidance experience is a plus.
  • Experience with existing Machine Vision Platforms such as Cognex, Keyence, Halcon, OpenCV or Tensorflow (Cognex platform preferred)
  • Experience implementing projects in a regulated/validated environment.
  • Strong knowledge of objectโ€‘oriented programming languages and machine vision technologies (C#, C++ or Python preferred)
  • Experience with AI Neural Networks, 3D Imaging and Metrology Inspections (Cognex ViDi Deep Learning preferred)
  • Advanced understanding and knowledge of computer vision solutions and principles including image acquisition, optics, lighting, algorithm development, object detection, segmentation, and recognition, AI neural networks, 3D imaging, and metrology inspections.
  • Fluent in English, Dutch and/or French. Ideally have a knowledge of German.
