Job description

Job Summary Under direct supervision, the Machinist 2nd Class performs work requiring basic skills and abilities in setting up operating machine tools, fitting and assembling parts to make or repair metal parts and machines. Because the Authority has a primary responsibility to serve the public 24 hours a day an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand, and may be required to accept overtime on short notice during emergency or unusual conditions and to perform essential work as assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Sets-up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, hydraulic press, drill press, roller, shaper, hydraulic shears and power saws Fits and assembles parts to make or repair metal parts, mechanism, tools or machines Measures and marks dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machinery Fabricates parts and flanges for connecting pipes, threads, etc. Machines screws and bolts; cuts and rolls plates to be used as patches; repairs rotors for electric motors and air registers for the boilers Fabricates pump parts such as bushings, shafts, couplings, etc. Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic knowledge of mechanics, metal properties and layout machining procedures Basic knowledge of the use of a variety of machines and tools used in machinist work Basic knowledge of safety practices, rules and regulations governing the work Ability to utilize a variety of machinery and tools to repair manufacture and machine parts Ability to complete work from reviewing sketches, drawings and other specifications Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with persons contacted during the course of the work Education & Experience High School diploma, or equivalent, and a Certificate from a college or technical school and one (1) year of related experience and/or training in machine work.
