Description
The Custodian is responsible for contributing to a safe, clean, orderly, and welcoming environment for students, personnel, and visitors to the KCC campus.
Examples of Duties
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform the position description satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Contributes to creating a safe, clean, orderly, and welcoming environment for students, personnel, and visitors to the KCC campus.
  • Provides all cleaning functions, including sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, polishing, and dusting in assigned campus buildings and grounds, including restrooms, offices, common areas, and all other areas of KCC facilities.
  • Empties trash and garbage containers into appropriate dumpsters. Additionally, handles recyclables and places in appropriate containers. Restocks and refills soap, paper, and other dispensing equipment.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs when skill level and time allow.
  • Reports larger issues to Custodial Supervisor or Facilities Director.
  • Assists, as appropriate, with the training and instruction of work study and part-time employees in the daily cleaning of campus facilities.
  • Maintains knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Operates equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, vacuums, scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment.
  • Effectively and efficiently utilizes cleaning materials and supplies. Properly handles all chemicals per instructions and safe work standards.
  • Assists in the moving of campus materials and assets.
  • Assists, if instructed, with the campus grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, irrigation, weed removal, leaf collection, snow removal, and other landscaping activities.
  • Maintains knowledge of the operation of landscaping equipment and tools.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Facilities and Custodial Supervisor, executes special event set up, clean up, teardown, and resetting of campus rooms and furnishings.
  • Maintains and services facility equipment, as needed. Submits major service or repair requests the Custodial Supervisor.
  • Maintains safe, clean, and organized work areas, including the maintenance shop, custodial, and storage areas.
  • When instructed, inspects and protects incoming materials and coordinates delivery and unloading to appropriate location, including safely moving materials to other campus locations.
  • Participates as part of the safety and security response to emergency situations on campus.
  • Performs security work, including the locking and unlocking of buildings as required. Assists the campus security staff in execution of their duties.

Non-Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • As needed and directed, participates in other KCC projects, events, and committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Needed to Perform This Role
  • Knowledge in the use and potential hazards of cleaning agents including solvents, disinfectants, detergents, and polishing agents.
  • Past experience in standard custodial practices, procedures, and techniques in an organization with extended hours of operation and multiple high-traffic areas.
  • Must have basic computer skills, such as email for communication and recordkeeping within the department.
  • Basic verbal and reading skills.

Physical Demands & Working Conditions
  • Occasionally needs to climb and/or balance in high places and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently needs to stand and walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently exposed to dirt, dust, and cleaning solutions, works near moving mechanical parts, and may require periodic use of respirators.
  • Physical skill and sustained physical effort may be required for some of the custodial responsibilities, such as operating equipment, shoveling snow, and similar tasks.
  • Job requires moderate strength and agility.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent and minimum six (6) months of custodian experience.
  • Past experience operating floor scrubbing machines, carpet shampooing equipment, and high-speed floor polishing equipment.
