Job Title: Inside Machinist
Location: Rhode Island

Summary:
The Inside Machinist is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC and manual machining equipment to fabricate precision components for shipbuilding and industrial applications. This role requires strong machining fundamentals, the ability to interpret technical drawings, and experience working in a high-production environment.
We are currently hiring multiple Inside Machinists across specialized shop areas, including Machine Shop, Sheet Metal Shop, and Pipe Shop. Candidates must have hands-on experience with designated equipment relevant to each shop's operational needs.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Set up and operate CNC and manual machines to produce precision components to exact specifications.
  • Work on advanced equipment such as Mazak Vari-Axis (5-axis), MAG 2000 (VTL with milling capabilities), Mazak 650 (turning center with milling capabilities), Trumpf laser systems, and manual/engine lathes depending on shop placement.
  • Utilize conversational programming on Mazak machines to create and modify machining programs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and machining instructions.
  • Select proper tooling, fixtures, and cutting parameters for various materials and job requirements.
  • Perform machine adjustments, offsets, and tool changes to maintain accuracy and efficiency.
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools to ensure compliance with tolerances and specifications.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and perform basic equipment maintenance.
  • Maintain production and quality documentation.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper PPE use and adherence to facility protocols.
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to meet project deadlines.

  • Machine Shop (3 Positions):
    • Experience with Mazak Vari-Axis (5-axis machining)
    • Experience with MAG 2000 (Vertical Turning Lathe with milling capabilities)
    • Experience with Mazak 650 (turning center with milling capabilities)
    • Strong preference for candidates with Mazak conversational programming experience
  • Sheet Metal Shop (4 Positions):
    • Experience operating Trumpf laser cutting machines
    • Ability to work with sheet metal fabrication processes
  • Pipe Shop (3 Positions):
    • Strong lathe machining experience
    • Ability to machine pipe components with precision tolerances

Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Formal machinist or CNC training preferred
  • 3+ years of machining experience in industrial, manufacturing, or shipyard environments
  • Experience working with large components and tight tolerances preferred
Skills & Competencies:
  • Proficiency in CNC operation and/or conversational programming (Mazak preferred)
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret technical drawings
  • Knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials
  • Experience with multi-axis machining, turning centers, or laser cutting (shop dependent)
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
Certifications (Preferred):
  • OSHA 10 or 30 (Maritime or General Industry)
  • NCCER Machinist certification or equivalent
  • Forklift or crane operation certification (if applicable)

Working Conditions:
  • Work performed in a shipyard or industrial machine shop environment
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise, heavy equipment, metal shavings, and industrial fluids
  • Standing for long periods and lifting up to 50 lbs may be required
  • Use of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots, and gloves
  • Overtime, night, or weekend work may be required based on production schedules
