RSi is looking to fill a Machine Tool Operator position to support our NASA customer on the Marshall Engineering Technicians and Trades Support contract (METTS). The Machine Tool Operator is responsible for seting up and operating machine tools to manufacture and repair precision metal and nonmetal parts used in jigs, fixtures, gauges, dies, and assemblies.

This position may require occasional overtime and may include second or third shift support for 24/7 onsite or on-call support based on customer needs and contract requirements.

Summary of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and executes complex machining operations, selects appropriate feeds, speeds and tooling, and uses precision measuring instruments to achieve very close tolerances.
  • Set up and operate machine tools (lathes, mills, grinders, jig borers).
  • Plan and perform complex machining operations with precise multi-step setups.
  • Install cutting tools and adjust guides, stops, tables, and controls.
  • Determine proper feeds, speeds, tooling, and operation sequence from drawings.
  • Measure machined parts with precision instruments and make adjustments to very close tolerances to achieve requisite dimensions.
  • Select coolants, cutting oils, and perform tool dressing as needed.
  • Fabricate, repair, and finish metal parts, gauges, dies, and fixtures.

Required Minimum Education/Experience/Certifications:

  • Expertise with machines such as engine lathes, milling machines, grinders, and jig borers, and the ability to interpret drawings, blueprints, and layouts
  • Extensive knowledge of machine shop and tool room practice usually acquired though considerable on-the-job training and experience
  • Familiarity with tool dressing, coolants, and cutting/lubricating oils

Preferred Experience/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/IT Skills/Certifications:

  • Experience operating CNC Lathe or CNC Mill
  • Strong communication skillset

Work Environment:

  • Machine Shop, Laboratory, test environments, test stands, possible confined spaces
  • Loud/Noisy space

Physical Environment/Requirements (with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Must be able to bend, stoop or lift occasionally with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • All positions supporting the METTS III contract are contingent upon successful completion of NASA medical screenings at the beginning of employment and annually thereafter. The need for these screenings is determined based on the outcomes of the Safety, Health, and Environmental Job Assessment Questionnaire.
