Job description

Job Summary:

The Saw Shop Technician supports the safe, precise, and efficient operation of the saw shop by assisting with the maintenance, repair, and preparation of all including circular saws, edger saws, and related tooling. This position is responsible for ensuring saws are properly sharpened, tensioned, leveled and maintained to maximize production efficiency, lumber quality, and equipment reliability. The Saw Shop Team requirements are to maintain high safety standards in the saw shop and production areas.

Key Responsibilities

Tooling Maintenance & Repair

  • Sharpen, level, tension, align, and maintain circular saws accord to mill specifications.
  • Assist with grinding, honing, and setting of saw teeth to achieve optimal cutting performance and quality standards
  • Maintain edger and circular saws for all mills
  • Prepare saws daily for shipment to correct mills, ensuring proper inventory and readiness.

Shop Operations & Equipment

  • Operate saw-shop machinery including grinders, levelers, tensioning machines, measuring instruments, and handling fixtures.
  • Maintain saw-shop tools, equipment, and work areas in clean, safe, and compliant condition.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate saw/tooling inventory and tracking blade service life.
  • Follow all lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures when handling or working around energized equipment.
  • Support preventive maintenance (PM) activities and help troubleshoot cutting-tool issues.

Quality & Production Support

  • Perform routine inspection of saws for cracks, wear, improper alignment, and stress points.
  • Ensure saw alignment and condition meet production standards for kerf accuracy, board quality, and throughput.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all mill safety rules, PPE requirements, and saw-shop safe-work practices.
  • Handle blades, tools, and grinding equipment safely to prevent lacerations, kickbacks, and pinch-point injuries.
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and corrective action follow-ups.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, company safety policies, and saw-shop best practices.

Collaboration & Support

  • Provide communication to supervisors on tool conditions, wear patterns, and equipment concerns.
  • Assist with training other staff on saw handling, shop procedures, and proper tool usage when requested.

Qualifications

Required

  • .Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and safely handle large saws and tooling.
  • Ability to stand, bend, reach, and work in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and safety focus.

Preferred

  • Mechanical aptitude and experience working with hand tools, precision measuring tools, or industrial machinery
  • Strong math skills

Safety

  • Do not enter restricted areas
  • Never approach a saw while it is still running
  • Follow all mill safety rules, PPE requirements, and saw-shop safe-work practices
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and corrective action follow-ups.
  • Handle blades, tools, and grinding equipment safely to prevent lacerations, kickbacks, and pinch-point injuries
  • Wear all required personal protective equipment: safety glasses, hearing protection, cut sleeves as required
  • Report immediately to supervisor any equipment that is unsafe or functioning improperly
  • Request assistance when a task exceeds individual knowledge
  • Visually inspect equipment and area before starting/operating
  • Whenever possible, eliminate unsafe conditions as soon as possible Use Standard Lockout Procedures when appropriate for machine centers Use proper
