Job Title: Machine Operator

Job Description

This role is responsible for setting up, operating, and tending sheet metal fabrication machines to produce industrial-grade steel products. You will work with CNC-controlled equipment, including press brakes, punch presses, and folding machines, to cut, bend, notch, and form metal according to detailed production specifications and blueprints.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate sheet metal fabrication machines, including CNC-controlled press brakes, punch presses, and folding machines, to produce steel components according to production specifications.
• Read and interpret work orders, production schedules, and blueprints to determine materials, cutting and folding lines, dimensions, and tolerances.
• Start machines, select and load the correct program for each part, monitor machine operations, and record operational data accurately.
• Position guides, stops, holding blocks, and other fixtures to secure and direct workpieces using hand tools, tape measures, and other measuring devices.
• Position, align, and secure workpieces against fixtures or stops on machine beds or dies to ensure accurate forming and cutting.
• Measure completed workpieces to verify conformance to specifications using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, rulers, and tape measures.
• Conduct quality checks by examining completed workpieces for defects such as chipped edges and marred surfaces, sorting defective pieces by type of flaw and recording findings properly.
• Perform daily machine safety checks to ensure all safety guards and devices are secure and functioning, and refrain from running any machine that is unsafe.
• Perform routine daily maintenance, including cleaning and lubricating machines, to keep equipment in good working condition.
• Grind out burrs and sharp edges using portable grinders and other required tools to ensure finished parts meet quality and safety standards.
• Collaborate with internal departments to help maintain on-time production schedules and support efficient workflow.
• Operate forklifts and other material handling equipment as needed to move materials and finished parts within the fabrication shop.
• Assist with general labor and assembly tasks within the fabrication machine shop as required to support overall production.

Essential Skills

• Proven experience as a machine operator in a fabrication machine shop or similar manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on experience operating and setting up press brakes, punch presses, and folding machines.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and production schedules.
• Strong ability to read and use a tape measure accurately for dimensions and layout.
• Proficiency using micrometers, calipers, gauges, rulers, and other precision measuring tools.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical equipment and hand tools.
• Experience performing basic machine setup, including selecting programs, adjusting settings, and positioning fixtures.
• Ability to perform routine maintenance, including cleaning and lubricating machines.
• Capability to conduct quality checks and identify defects such as chipped edges, burrs, and marred surfaces.
• Ability to follow safety procedures and perform daily machine safety checks before operation.
• Comfort working in a production environment with repetitive tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating forklifts or other material handling equipment.
• Background in general labor and assembly within a manufacturing or fabrication setting.
• Familiarity with brake press machines and other sheet metal fabrication equipment.
• Experience troubleshooting basic machine and production issues.
• Comfort working with hand tools, portable grinders, and other shop tools.
• Previous experience working from detailed blueprints and templates in a production environment.

Work Environment

This position works on second shift, Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The role is based in a sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing environment that uses CNC-controlled press brakes, punch presses, folding machines, and other fabrication equipment. The facility can become hot during the summer and may be cool or humid at other times, reflecting typical conditions in an industrial production setting. The environment includes exposure to high noise levels, dust, chemicals, oil, and grease, and requires comfort working around heavy machinery and moving equipment such as forklifts. The shop is a typical manufacturing floor that is neither extremely dirty nor exceptionally clean, and you should be prepared to wear appropriate personal protective equipment and attire suitable for a fabrication machine shop.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of SOUTH BELOIT, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $20.50/hr.
